Job Description
As an Engineering Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting the planning and execution of road and highway projects. You will work closely with Township Highway Commissioners and the County Highway Department to ensure efficient project management, from drafting plans to conducting inspections.
Responsibilities
- Assist Township Highway Commissioners with annual maintenance planning and required MFT documentation.
- Prepare plans, specifications, proposals, and contracts for County and Township road projects.
- Serve as Resident Engineer on non-federally funded projects.
- Act as right-of-way negotiator for non-federally funded projects.
- Perform bridge inspections as an Inspector or Team Leader in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
- Collect field data to conduct drainage studies and determine culvert sizing.
- Perform material testing and related documentation for construction projects, including concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and reinforcement.
- Inspect construction and maintenance projects as assigned.
- Complete drafting, plan preparation, right-of-way plats, drainage layouts, mapping, and limited roadway design work.
- Conduct preliminary surveying and construction layout staking.
- Prepare permit applications for agencies such as the Corps of Engineers, IDNR, EPA, and Department of Conservation.
- Assemble contract proposals, specifications, and special provisions for MFT projects.
- Attend training and conferences to maintain or enhance job-related skills.
- Work additional hours as required due to contractor schedules or emergency situations.
- Maintain accurate job records and timekeeping.
- Train and support subordinate staff.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum of an Associate's Degree in a technical field.
- Experience in a civil or construction technician role, preferably with local municipality or highway experience.
- Proficiency in drafting and plan preparation, GIS, Civil 3D, AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of construction inspection, material testing, surveying, concrete, reinforcement bars, drainage, and asphalt testing.
- Familiarity with IDOT, FHWA, EPA, and municipality/highway regulations.
- Valid Driver's License required.
- Candidates are eligible for advancement to Engineering Tech I-III.
- Opportunities for further advancement into Engineering Tech II, Engineering Tech III, or Civil Engineer roles.
This role involves both field and office work within a County Highway Department. You will operate under the general supervision of the County Engineer and the direct supervision of the Assistant County Engineer. The position may require extra hours due to contractor schedules or emergency situations and includes supervising part-time summer help. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kankakee, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $29.88 - $37.05/hr.
