The Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a postdoctoral appointeee in the Separations and Bioprocessing group. This position will have two focus areas. One is to support an effort to recycle graphite from Li-ion batteries to produce graphene and graphite for reuse in batteries or other applications. The other focus will be on valorizing waste products from coal production including coal fines to produce graphite precursor materials. This separation will likely include processes such as froth flotation, gravity separation and leaching.

Position Requirements
  • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically completed within the last 0-5 years) in chemistry, chemical engineering or materials science (those with other degrees but have similar skills to those listed will be considered).
  • Knowledge in the following areas: Li-ion batteries - including fabrication of coin cells and performing electrochemical performance testing, characterization of carbonaceous materials - including Raman, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, running reactors such as CSTRs to run various processes. and exfoliation of graphite into graphene using solution-based processes.
  • Skilled communications skills at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Skills in installing, modifying and maintaining equipment.
  • Willingness to abide by safety rules.
  • Ability to work with large volumes of hazardous chemicals.
  • Flexibility to change projects and work on a variety of projects simultaneously

  • This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois five days per week.

The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00-$117,925.00.
