Job Description
The Cell Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, upkeep, and troubleshooting of automated adapters and robotic systems that interface with a conveyor and automated storage and retrieval structure. This role focuses on ensuring system readiness, maintaining high throughput, and supporting performance targets by operating equipment through Human/Machine Interface (HMI) terminals and performing hands-on tasks inside the structure, including suspect product work, cleaning, and basic mechanical upkeep.
Responsibilities
- Ensure daily compliance with all safety commitments, OSHA guidelines, and site-specific processes and procedures.
- Perform pre-production checks on automated adapters to verify that all equipment is in a safe, ‘ready to run’ state before operations begin.
- Process and monitor the flow of the automated storage and retrieval system, including manual inbound, automatic inbound, and automatic outbound activities, to achieve maximum throughput and cases per hour.
- Prepare pallets for induction into the automated storage and retrieval system according to operational standards.
- Identify causes of system stoppages using the Human/Machine Interface (HMI) and manual intervention, and take appropriate actions to return the system to service.
- Work inside the automated structure during shutdowns to locate missing or misplaced products, retrieve them, and place them in the correct locations.
- Perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, kneeling, crawling, and lifting while working within the structure to access products and components.
- Clean sensors, tracks, and other system components to correct issues and maintain optimal system performance.
- Assist other team members with system operation and troubleshooting to maintain continuous flow and uptime.
- Analyze recurring faults, identify patterns, and recommend or implement effective corrective actions.
- Communicate and escalate any issues that impact production immediately to operational leadership and leads.
- Contribute to overall system uptime through system preservation, robot recovery, suspect product removal, and bot health activities.
- Recommend process and continuous improvement ideas to enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety.
- Perform periodic system inspections, including cleaning, lubrication, tolerance checks, and component validation.
- Report all out-of-specification conditions and support root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Maintain continuous operation of system components by monitoring performance and addressing minor issues proactively.
- Use radios with proper etiquette to obtain instructions and coordinate activities with leadership and operational leads.
- Perform rover bot upkeep, including replacing wheels, cleaning components, and maintaining ESD brushes, sensors, and related parts.
- Carry out automated robotic vehicle recovery within the matrix select system, including working in restrictive and confined environments when required.
- Assist automation technicians during breakdown calls and support continuous system availability through collaborative problem solving.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in a machine operator or entry-level maintenance role.
- Proficiency using touchscreens, computers, and mobile phones to operate and monitor automated systems.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, communicate clearly, and propose practical solutions.
- Consistent and reliable attendance with a strong, stable work history.
- Experience with machine operating in a production or manufacturing setting.
- Basic understanding of preventive and preventative maintenance concepts.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical or operational issues in an automated or semi-automated environment.
- Comfort working around automation, robotics, and conveyor-based production systems.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work including bending, kneeling, crawling, and lifting within restrictive spaces.
- Ability to follow detailed safety procedures and operational instructions in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or completion of a trade school program is preferred.
- Experience with automation systems, robotic equipment, or automated storage and retrieval systems.
- Mechanical aptitude, including basic repair and adjustment of mechanical components.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubrication, and tolerance checking.
- Experience in environments involving production, machine operation, or robotics.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and support colleagues with system troubleshooting.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with operational leadership and team members.
- Continuous improvement mindset with the willingness to suggest and support process enhancements.
Why Work Here?
You will join a rapidly growing organization whose automation and robotic systems are positioned at the leading edge of distribution technology. The company promotes a transparent culture with open communication and a strong team mentality, where dependable teammates who show up and contribute consistently are recognized and rewarded. You can expect opportunities for promotions, comprehensive benefits, and long-term advancement for those who are motivated and committed. The team invests heavily in training on state-of-the-art technology, helping you build valuable technical skills and develop a career in advanced automation and robotics.
Work Environment
This role is based within a large distribution center that utilizes an advanced automated racking system, multiple robotic arm cells for inbound and outbound operations, and approximately 300 mobile robots. Robotic arms break down large inbound pallets and restack individual products, which are then wrapped and prepared for shipment, while mobile robots navigate the racking system to pull products for outbound orders. Some racking reaches heights of up to 45 feet, and certain work must be performed in restrictive areas as narrow as 24 inches. The environment offers protection from outdoor weather but not from temperature variation, and you must be capable of working in conditions ranging from approximately 105°F down to 32°F. Work involves close interaction with automated equipment, conveyors, HMIs, and robotic systems, along with regular physical activity such as bending, kneeling, crawling, lifting, and working in confined spaces. Standard industrial attire suitable for a distribution and automation setting is expected, along with any required personal protective equipment appropriate for working around machinery and robotics.
