Job Title: Mechanical Assembler
Job Description
This role focuses on assembling test filtration machinery and related equipment to meet strict production and quality standards. You will interpret blueprints, select appropriate assembly methods, and use hand and power tools to fit, align, and assemble mechanical and electrical components into complete, operational units. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to perform final testing and adjustments to ensure equipment operates reliably and safely.
Responsibilities
- Assemble test filtration machinery and related equipment in accordance with production and quality standards.
- Select appropriate assembly methods and erection procedures based on blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Fit parts to specified tolerances and operating requirements using hand and power tools.
- Align and assemble subassemblies, motors, pumps, and other components into completed units.
- Cut and fit pipe and tubing and make necessary electrical and piping connections.
- Position parts according to the layout of the unit being assembled or according to engineering drawings.
- Fasten parts using bolts, screws, speed clips, and other appropriate fasteners.
- Drill and tap holes for fasteners as required by the assembly process.
- Use hand files and other tools to remove small quantities of metal and achieve precise fits between parts.
- Perform mechanical assembly, including elements of machine building, welding, fabrication, and basic wiring as needed.
- Conduct operating tests on components and completed units to verify proper operation.
- Make final adjustments and fine-tuning to ensure equipment meets performance and safety requirements.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical issues that arise during assembly and testing.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks on machinery and tools used in the assembly process.
- Visually inspect parts and assemblies for fit, finish, and surface defects, and report discrepancies to supervision.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while following all safety procedures.
- Collaborate with team members and other departments to meet production schedules and resolve assembly issues.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience in mechanical assembly or machine building in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Strong hands-on skills using hand and power tools for assembly, drilling, tapping, cutting, and fitting.
- Demonstrated ability to fit, align, and assemble manufactured or purchased parts, motors, pumps, and subassemblies into complete units.
- Experience making electrical and piping connections as part of equipment assembly.
- Competence in positioning parts according to layouts or engineering documentation.
- Ability to fasten parts with bolts, screws, speed clips, and other mechanical fasteners.
- Skill in drilling and tapping holes accurately for fasteners.
- Experience visually inspecting parts and assemblies for fit, finish, and surface defects.
- Ability to use hand files and similar tools to remove small amounts of metal and achieve precise fits.
- Experience testing components and completed units to verify proper operation.
- Troubleshooting skills related to mechanical systems, hydraulics, and basic electrical components.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices for mechanical and assembly equipment.

- Capability to follow detailed work instructions and quality standards consistently.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in hydraulics, mechanical maintenance, or maintenance technician work.
- Experience with welding and fabrication in a manufacturing setting.
- Exposure to construction or industrial installation environments.

Work Environment
This is a hands-on industrial role in a manufacturing facility with both first and second shift opportunities. First shift typically runs from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and second shift runs from 3:15 p.m. to 11:45 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch. Standard shifts are 8 hours, with the possibility of extending to 10 hours as needed. There may be occasional Saturday work up to 8 hours, and some days may require a 6:00 a.m. start, so schedule flexibility is important. The facility is well lit and located in a character-filled building with many windows, originally constructed in 1906. Temperatures can vary with the seasons and may range from warm in the summer to cooler in the winter; in hotter months, fans and open doors help improve airflow, and cold drinks and frozen treats are provided. You will regularly use hand and power tools, work around machinery and mechanical equipment, and operate in a production environment that emphasizes safety, quality, and teamwork. Dress is typical for an industrial manufacturing setting, suitable for working with tools, machinery, and materials in a shop floor environment.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rockford, IL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr.
