Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens.
- Record maintenance data and decontaminate equipment.
- Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
- Clearly explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understand and adhere to physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department training sessions.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Qualifications & Skills
- Required: High School diploma or GED completion.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred not required.
- 6+ months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment.
- Preferably 2 years of experience.
- Experience in drawing blood, processing, order entry, and handling patient interactions from start to finish.
- Potential for temporary to permanent hire.
- Phlebotomy skills including specimen handling and blood draw techniques.
- Experience with sample accessioning, preparation, storage, and management.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, including centrifuge operation.
- Ability to manage biological samples in blood banks or biobanks.
- Proficiency in data entry and Microsoft Office.
- Strong understanding of venipuncture techniques, especially in geriatrics and pediatrics.
Work Environment
The work schedule is Monday through Friday, with hours varying between 6am and 6pm. Most likely hours will be 7am or 8am start time. The role may require floating to multiple Patient Service Centers (PSCs) and In-Office Phlebotomists (IOPs) in the Fort Wayne and surrounding area. Training will take place in Fort Wayne. Some positions may be stationary, while others may require movement between locations.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr.
