Job Description
The Quality Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the highest standards of quality assurance and control within the laboratory. This position involves working primarily with sweeteners, corn syrups, and sugar products, which are processed into corn sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and starches for human and animal feed. The laboratory is divided into chemistry and microbiology sections, where technicians perform extractions and work on liquid products.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and analyze various final product and in-process samples using analytical instruments and wet chemistry techniques.
- Facilitate plant process flow by providing timely and accurate analysis results.
- Post analysis results into data systems and communicate findings to plant personnel.
- Recognize abnormal findings and collaborate with process teams to resolve issues.
- Conduct final QA/QC of outbound shipments and document results.
- Follow established analysis methodologies and perform basic laboratory equipment maintenance.
- Support other departments with analytical and project-based efforts on an ad hoc basis.
- Ensure adherence to all company policies and procedures and demonstrate core values.
- Support a 24/7 process by working a rotating shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Advance through skill block system, achieving four 'operate' skill blocks and a 'basic' skill block.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
- A 4-year degree in Chemistry, Biology, or another relevant scientific discipline.
- Ability to prepare and analyze in-process and finished goods using various laboratory methodologies and equipment.
- Experience and understanding of HPLC, GC, AA, NIR, pH, and other laboratory techniques.
- Willingness to support a 24/7 process and work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and maintain attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-starting and detail-oriented with good troubleshooting skills.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience with SAP is a plus.
Work Environment
Candidates will work 12-hour shifts, typically 3 days on and 3 days off, rotating between day and night shifts (e.g., 5 AM to 5 PM for 3 days, off for 3 days, then 5 PM to 5 AM for 3 days, off for 3 days). The role requires standing for extended periods, and the dress code includes jeans and a t-shirt.
