Job Title: Float Phlebotomist
Job Description
This (FLOAT) Phlebotomist role focuses on delivering high-quality specimen collection and processing while supporting smooth laboratory workflow while floating to support other clinics as needed. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, assist with troubleshooting and training, and make recommendations to improve efficiency. The position involves working with a variety of patient populations in a fast-paced clinical environment and managing the full patient experience from check-in through specimen processing.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles on a variety of patient populations, including pediatric patients.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Label specimen tubes accurately and match them with corresponding laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels.
- Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders, ensuring specimen integrity.
- Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes following protocol.
- Package specimens correctly for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain the integrity and stability of the samples.
- Review all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and specimen data in the system, including data entry tasks as needed.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures for equipment and work areas in accordance with lab standards.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and test processing.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy appropriate inquiries.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and quality standards in the laboratory and collection areas.
- Work independently as the sole phlebotomy professional on site, managing workflow and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
Essential Skills
- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
- Demonstrated proficiency in blood draws and venipuncture, including experience with pediatric patients.
- Strong specimen handling skills, including labeling, sample preparation, specimen management, and specimen storage.
- Ability to operate and use a centrifuge and other basic laboratory equipment safely and effectively.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, reporting, and communication tasks.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes and verify orders.
- Competence in data entry and maintaining accurate patient and specimen records.
- Understanding of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety standards.
- Clear, courteous communication skills for explaining procedures and responding to inquiries by phone and in person.
- Ability to work independently as the sole phlebotomy professional at a site, managing time and workload effectively.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED completion. Phlebotomy certification is not required but related training or coursework is beneficial.
- Experience with geriatric patients is a plus.
- Experience in laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or handling biological samples is advantageous.
- Experience in medical assisting or a similar clinical support role is helpful.
- Familiarity with Cerner or other electronic health record or laboratory information systems is a plus.
- Comfort working in pediatric settings and adapting communication to different age groups.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining specimen integrity and accuracy throughout the process.
Work Environment
This role supports outpatient clinical and laboratory settings and requires regular travel between multiple locations. The home base will be in the Muncie area, with floating coverage as far north as Fort Wayne and as far south as North Indianapolis. Mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable. The schedule is Monday through Friday, with typical Patient Service Center hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and IOP hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The work involves frequent interaction with patients, including pediatric populations, and regular use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and computer systems for data entry and result review. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, and proper handling and storage of biological specimens. Attire is expected to be professional and appropriate for a clinical and laboratory setting, supporting both patient-facing duties and hands-on specimen processing.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Muncie, IN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr.
