Job Description
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist supports a federal project in southwest Nebraska by developing, implementing, and maintaining effective environmental, health, and safety programs. This role focuses on ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing risk, promoting a strong safety culture, and supporting environmental stewardship through proactive monitoring, reporting, and training.
Responsibilities
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure safe working conditions.
- Investigate incidents and accidents, determine root causes, and prepare detailed reports with recommended corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards.
- Coordinate, develop, and deliver EHS training programs for employees to promote safe work practices and regulatory awareness.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of safety inspections, incident investigations, training activities, and compliance documentation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety, health, and environmental responsibility across the project.
- Manage environmental reporting requirements, including preparing and submitting required documentation to regulatory agencies and project stakeholders.
- Monitor and report on key EHS metrics and performance indicators to track progress, identify trends, and support continuous improvement.
- Collect and manage environmental samples as required to support environmental monitoring and compliance efforts.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field.
- At least 2 years of experience in an Environmental Health and Safety or related role, with industry-specific experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant environmental and occupational health and safety regulations.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess risk, interpret data, and develop effective corrective actions.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, documentation, and deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, conducting training, and collaborating with project teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and data analysis.
- Experience using EHS management software to track incidents, inspections, training, and compliance activities.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) are a plus.
- Experience working on federal or government-related projects is beneficial.
- Familiarity with environmental sampling techniques and reporting processes is advantageous.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders to build and sustain a strong safety culture.
This position supports a federal project located in southwest Nebraska for a Bureau of Land Management assignment. The role involves working in field and project-site environments where conditions may vary based on project activities and environmental factors. The specialist will use standard office tools such as Microsoft Office and EHS management software for documentation and reporting, as well as field equipment for inspections and environmental sampling. Per diem is provided in connection with project-related travel and on-site work. The work environment emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship, with close collaboration among project team members.

This is a Contract position based out of Lenexa, KS.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 - $50.00/hr.
