Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The primary role of the Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
- Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
- Clearly explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collections such as urine or fecal samples.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Understand and follow all physicians' orders accurately.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store sample specimens at the required temperatures.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department training.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Phlebotomy certification valid for the state of employment.
- At least 1 year of experience in phlebotomy, particularly with pediatric patients.
- Experience with hard sticks, needles, and specimen processing.
- Strong attention to detail and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED with 0-2 years of experience.
- Experience in customer service and data entry is beneficial.
- Experience working with pediatrics and geriatrics is a plus.
Work Environment
The position is based in a patient service center, operating Monday to Friday from 7:15 am to 4:15 pm. The location is fairly large, and the phlebotomist will work alongside one other employee. The role involves drawing mostly on babies and pediatric patients, requiring standing for most of the shift. Training will be provided during the first week.
