Position Title: Associate Scientist – Upstream MSAT (Manufacturing Sciences and Technology)
Location: Andover, MA
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, First Shift
Position Summary
A position is available for a highly motivated and versatile Associate Scientist to join the Upstream Group within Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT). This multidisciplinary team supports the late-stage development and commercialization of biopharmaceuticals and vaccines. The role focuses on upstream fermentation processes, including process troubleshooting, optimization, and second-generation process development.
The successful candidate will collaborate with scientists and engineers to set up bioreactors, execute well-designed experiments, perform basic analytics, and maintain laboratory equipment. This is an on-site laboratory role requiring hands-on work with biohazardous agents.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to upstream group goals and collaborate effectively with team members.
- Set up and operate bioreactors for microbial fermentation.
- Perform routine laboratory studies and basic analytics.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure a clean, safe, and functional workspace.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and internal safety protocols.
- Document work accurately in electronic lab notebooks.
- Support off-hours lab work approximately twice per week.
Exposure & Safety
- Work involves exposure to biohazardous agents, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Neisseria meningitidis, and Lentivirus.
- Compliance with all biosafety and regulatory requirements is mandatory.
Minimum Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioprocessing, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field.
- 0–3 years of relevant bioprocessing experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in aseptic technique (Required).
- Experience with bioreactor operations and analytical tools.
- Familiarity with cell culture and fermentation processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and work independently.
- Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills.
- Experience in industrial-scale fermentation, scale-up, and process optimization.
- Understanding of control and data acquisition systems.
- Curiosity and initiative in applying current scientific literature to practical challenges.
Physical & Mental Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Standing for extended periods, walking, bending, and using lab tools.
- Capable of performing mathematical calculations and complex data analysis.
