Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The position is essential in ensuring the proper collection, handling, and processing of specimens.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and conduct decontamination.
• Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, or other specimen collection clearly and courteously.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.
• Place samples in appropriate collection containers, label them accurately, and follow procedures for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2 year's of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience with blood draws, venipuncture, sample collection, phlebotomy, specimen collection, specimen processing, laboratory procedures, data entry, centrifuging, and medical terminology.

• Professionalism and customer service orientation.
• Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients required.
