Job Title: Large Animal Care Technician


Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Large Animal Care Technician to work independently in tasks that are routine yet complex. The role involves ensuring the humane care of a wide variety of laboratory animal species, including rodents, rabbits, birds, and frogs, while adhering to several established policies and procedures.


Responsibilities
  • Perform all tasks of the Animal Cage Washer as needed, including cleaning, sanitizing, and sterilizing animal cages and related equipment.
  • Fill animal feeders and water bottles with the appropriate types and amounts of food and water according to schedules and instructions.
  • Use aseptic techniques and disease prevention principles in biological safety cabinets.
  • Transfer animals from soiled cages to clean, sterilized cages in accordance with detailed instructions.
  • Work under isolation conditions with specialized caging units while adhering to aseptic techniques.
  • Observe and report signs of animal injuries, illness, or irregularities in appearance, health, and environment.
  • Assist in providing routine treatments as instructed.
  • Perform euthanasia following detailed training and instructions.
  • Receive and process incoming animals and materials, assisting in examining animals for compliance with specifications.
  • Assist in maintaining colonies of genetically altered rodents and perform data collection as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal care, including food and water consumption and environmental factors.
  • Calculate the animal census and report deviations to the supervisor.
  • Maintain adequate stock of feed, bedding, and other supplies.
  • Report to the supervisor the need for repairs to cages and support equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on automated watering systems and other equipment.
  • Collect, process, and remove waste materials, following appropriate disposal procedures.
  • Observe all safety policies and procedures, using equipment and chemical treatments properly.
  • Use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Follow good laboratory practice and housekeeping procedures.
  • Maintain equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
  • Knowledge of basic animal husbandry and research techniques.
  • Understanding of basic scientific terminology and measuring devices.
  • Knowledge of asepsis, disease control and prevention, and isolation techniques.
  • Familiarity with current regulations for the care and use of laboratory animals.
  • Ability to handle, restrain, and determine the sex of laboratory animals safely.
  • Competence in following detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing for record maintenance.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with faculty, students, staff, and visitors.
  • Capability to discuss animal-related projects with investigators.
  • Physical ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required.
Work Environment

Animal Research Lab with a 1st shift opening, requiring availability for weekend work as needed. The regular hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
