Job Description
The Production Research Field Assistant supports all aspects of agricultural field research by performing a wide range of outdoor field tasks and some indoor laboratory activities. This entry-level role is ideal for a self-motivated individual who enjoys hands-on work, can collaborate effectively in a team, and can also work independently. The position involves physically demanding tasks such as bending, lifting, and standing for long periods, often in varying weather conditions, to help ensure high-quality data collection and successful research plot management.
Responsibilities
- Assist with planting activities for research plots according to established protocols.
- Stake and label research plots to ensure accurate identification and organization.
- Support pollination activities in research plots as directed by research staff.
- Collect field and lab data using electronic devices, including iOS-based tablets, with a high level of accuracy.
- Perform routine research plot maintenance, including weed removal and general crop care.
- Assist with hand harvesting of research plots and accurately document harvest information.
- Participate in process improvement projects to enhance efficiency and quality in field and lab operations.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance of equipment used in field and lab activities.
- Aid with spraying activities and other specialized field operations under proper guidance and training.
- Follow all company and USDA-APHIS training requirements, policies, and safety procedures.
- Drive company vehicles during work hours when authorized and licensed to do so.
- Work extended hours and weekends during peak seasons to support critical field operations.
- Accurately perform repetitive tasks while maintaining focus on quality and safety.
- Communicate effectively with team members and follow verbal and written instructions in English.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written tasks and safety instructions delivered in English.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid driver's license for driving company vehicles, where applicable.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks such as bending and standing for long periods.
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
- 0–3 years of relevant experience in field work, farm labor, or similar hands-on roles.
- Ability to perform repetitive job tasks accurately and consistently.
- Willingness to work weekends and extended hours during peak seasons.
- Ability to learn and use Microsoft Office applications for basic data entry and reporting.
- Ability to learn and use iOS devices (such as iPads) for data collection in the field.
- Commitment to comply with company policies and USDA-APHIS training and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with farming or farm labor, including crop care and basic field operations.
- Experience with weed pulling and general field maintenance.
- Exposure to crop testing or agricultural research environments.
- Comfort working outdoors and performing tasks in a variety of weather conditions.
- Familiarity with production line or process-oriented work.
- Past pesticide application experience is desirable but not required.
- Experience using tablets or mobile devices, such as iPads, for data collection is a plus.

Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, with most time spent outdoors in agricultural research plots and some time in indoor laboratory or processing areas. Work involves extended periods of standing, bending, lifting up to 40 pounds, and performing repetitive tasks. Field activities take place in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and sun exposure. Team members use electronic devices such as iOS tablets for data collection and may work with standard office software like Microsoft Office for basic reporting. The position may require driving company vehicles during work hours for those who are licensed and authorized to do so. Work hours can extend beyond a standard schedule, with weekend work and longer days required during peak seasons to support critical planting, pollination, maintenance, and harvest activities. A focus on safety, adherence to company and USDA-APHIS policies, and proper use of equipment is central to the work environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Constantine, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $17.00 - $18.00/hr.
