Job Title: Paralegal
Job Description
The main function of a paralegal is to assist lawyers by researching legal precedent, investigating facts, or preparing legal documents. A typical paralegal is responsible for conducting research to support a legal proceeding, formulate a defense, or initiate legal action.
Responsibilities
- Prepare correspondence and legal papers such as summonses, complaints, motions, responses, and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney or a paralegal.
- Review legal journals and assist with legal research.
- May assist new lawyers with preparing documents for submission to the courts.
- Assist attorneys in collecting information such as employment, medical, and other records.
- Attend legal meetings such as client interviews, hearings, or depositions and take notes.
- Organize and maintain law libraries, documents, and case files.
- Prepare and process legal documents and papers such as summonses, subpoenas, complaints, appeals, motions, and pretrial agreements.
Essential Skills
- Verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Basic ability to work independently and manage one's time.
- Basic knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and the democratic political process.
- Previous experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate's degree in paralegal studies or equivalent training required.
- 0-2 years of experience required.
Work Environment
The position is a contract role based in the US. The work environment involves utilizing various computer applications, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, to assist in the preparation and organization of legal documents.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Detroit, Michigan.
