Job Title: Design Engineer
Job Description
The Design Engineer will play a pivotal role in leading the design, development, and testing of custom engineering pumps used in hydraulic applications. These pumps specialize in high pressure and high flow, supporting several industries including aerospace, forging presses, extrusion presses, die casting manufacturing, and offshore drilling applications. The Design Engineer will manage 2-3 projects at a time, each in different phases, with durations ranging from 6 months to 3 years. The role involves becoming a product expert responsible for commercializing the product and supporting sales efforts by meeting with customers and aiding in implementation on rigs or sites.
Responsibilities
- Design pump applications utilizing Inventor or Solidworks, dedicating 70% of time to this task.
- Conduct testing, including writing test protocols, building test components, setting up tests, running tests, collecting data, and evaluating results, which accounts for 20% of the workload.
- Spend 10% of time on the production floor, assisting in analyzing pump failures to determine root cause and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners and heat treat vendors to develop and update production processes and specifications to ensure quality and performance of pump components.
- Utilize simulation software such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software.
- Experience in Hydraulic Pump Design or Fluid Power Systems Design.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
- Skill in using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, specifically AutoDesk Inventor Package.
- Experience in creating testing procedures and using testing equipment.
- Knowledge of Axial Piston Pumps and Variable Displacement Pumps.
- Familiarity with Hydraulic Pump Design Standards such as ISO, ANSI, and API.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Design experience with variable displacement pumps, axial piston pumps, or work in rotating group for pump design.
Work Environment
The role offers standard work hours, with flexible start times between 7-8 am. Occasional overtime may be expected based on project demands. Travel is minimal, with 1 international trip per year and 2-3 short domestic trips to customer facilities or other company locations. The team comprises 10 engineers, fostering a collaborative environment. Benefits include a salaried position, 10/11 paid holidays, including one floater, and 100 hours of PTO front-loaded at the start of the year, pro-rated based on start date.
