We are seeking resumes for an Assistant Superintendent for the Pulp Mill in our International Falls, MN Paper Mill. The International Falls facility is a White Paper Mill owned by Packaging Corporation of America.

The Assistant Superintendent of Pulp Mill position is responsible for the day-to-day operational management of all aspects of pulping process including chip reclaim area, digesters, brown stock washers, screen room, pulp chemical additives, Process Safety Management Area (PSM). This position is responsible for safety, to facilitate equipment maintenance, environmental conformance, training, management of the crews, and optimization of productivity.

Principle Accountabilities:
  • Manage all safety policies within the department which include the adherence to and enforcement of mill safety rules, procedures, personal protective equipment, and OSHA compliance. Individual is responsible for creating a safe work environment for their employees. Responsible for the creation and periodic review of Stand Operating Procedures (SOPs) and system lockouts for the process area.
  • Set standards and expectations around housekeeping and basic care routes in the department. Monitor, follow-up, and report performance.
  • Set expectations and drive improvement around environmental compliance of the operation. Develop plans for targets and objectives identified for continuous improvement efforts.
  • Set expectations for quality standards and provide necessary resources to maintain stable and capable quality performance.
  • Responsible for financial performance of the process area. Work with the Accounting Department to implement and execute budgets.
  • Plan and schedule resources for department needs. Work with the Production and Maintenance teams to plan for scope of repair days and annual outages.
  • Follow-up on all equipment and resource issues.
  • Manage development and training needs for department personnel. Write and revise training packets, monitor training, and lead oral exams for job qualification candidates. Develop a culture of continuous operator improvement.
  • Work with the operators and engineers to ensure assets are meeting or exceeding productivity targets at lowest possible cost.
  • Work with capital engineering to justify and execute capital projects in the area.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong leadership skills and experience leading a team, or a strong understanding of the importance of open communication and information sharing among co-workers.
  • Experience in a pulping/bleaching or other manufacturing environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to network and build relationships with individuals of various experience both within the local mill and the corporate level, and outside of the company.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple requests simultaneously.
  • Strong listening, evaluating, and problem-solving skills. Ability to create alternative solutions and meet deadlines.
  • Solid working knowledge of PC applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook and Project.
Basic Qualifications:

BS Degree in Engineering, Chemical, Pulp and Paper Science, or equivalent education/experience with demonstrated management and leadership abilities, or Pulp/Bleach experience minimum of five years.

Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
