Design Technician (Utility Design – AutoCAD)

Contract-to-Hire | Hybrid | Saint Paul, MN

Pay: $20.00–$23.00/hr

Start (or grow) your career in utility design with a team that supports critical infrastructure. You’ll use AutoCAD to produce constructible designs for overhead and underground electric projects—plus learn permitting, easements, and field validation along the way.

What You’ll Do

• Draft and update utility design drawings using AutoCAD (overhead + underground electric).
• Perform basic engineering/math & measurement calculations to support design decisions.
• Validate easements/right-of-way and support design/construction cost estimates.
• Build and process permit packages (plans, exhibits, documentation).
• Conduct field surveys/inspections of overhead and underground lines (about 20% field time).
• Review GIS Smallworld for updates and potential design conflicts.
• Coordinate across departments to keep projects on schedule and customers informed.
• Apply safety rules, design standards, and regulations in daily work.
• Interpret and work from electronic pole diagrams.

What We’re Looking For

Required

• Proficiency in AutoCAD
• Ability to pass a math/measurement assessment
• Strong organization skills (you’ll manage multiple projects)

Preferred

• Associate’s degree in Design, Drafting, Engineering, or similar
• Previous CAD experience (internship/coursework welcome)
• Familiarity with GIS Smallworld (or other GIS tools)

Work Style & Location

• Hybrid role based in Saint Paul, MN
• Roughly 80% office/remote and 20% field work

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint Paul, MN.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
