Job Title: Plant Reproductive Biologist


Job Description

This entry-level role involves studying the fundamental principles of plant biology and the impact of environmental conditions on plant growth. The position requires familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field and includes a variety of tasks performed under general supervision.


Responsibilities

  • Cultivate plants in controlled environment settings.
  • Support scientific research on maize pollen speed breeding and seed production.
  • Assist with plant breeding and nursery optimization activities, including prototype development and testing.
  • Collect field and greenhouse samples, conduct viability assays, perform pollinations, and maintain accurate records.
  • Operate greenhouse environmental control systems and perform routine maintenance such as cleaning floors and organizing supplies.
  • Participate in team and project meetings and communicate updates, changes, or issues promptly and clearly.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and 1-3 years of related experience.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform repetitive movements such as bending.
  • Strong interest in greenhouse operations, plant propagation, and irrigation.
  • High attention to detail and effective task prioritization.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-project team environment.
  • Proficiency in basic math and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Availability to work independently on some weekends and holidays.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Willingness to travel to field sites located 4-6 hours from Chesterfield, with approximately three overnight trips (3-4 days each) during the summer (June-August).
  • Travel is required for 1-2 weeks during the summer months.

Work Environment

The work environment includes laboratory, greenhouse, office, and field settings. Employees are required to wear closed shoes, pants, long sleeve shirts, and safety glasses. The role involves handling chemicals such as soluble fertilizer, cleaning soap, and bleach. Employees should be prepared to lift up to 30 lbs.
