Job Title: Field Technician
Job Description
This position involves the preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and design estimates. The role requires analytical competence to interact with various individuals, including engineers. The technician will acquire a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), national engineering standards, utility construction standards, and best industry engineering practices. A broad understanding of engineering disciplines, including design, constructability, and the economics involved in construction methods and materials, is essential.
Responsibilities
- Maintain production and quality of projects, including field data, photographs, engineering analysis, reports, and departmental databases.
- Prepare and modify electrical and roadway drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, and construction drawing packages.
- Perform field technical services for the operation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems, including system inventories, audits, joint use management, permitting, pad-mount inspections, ground-line pole inspections, and lighting audits.
- Collect field data using laptop computers, tablets, GPS, and other electronic devices for database input.
- Develop a working knowledge of telephone, cable, and other communication facilities.
- Operate necessary equipment to take measurements on utility poles and mid-span facilities, perform pole inspections, and inspect and maintain pad-mount equipment.
- Present ideas effectively in both formal and informal situations, maintaining clear communication through writing, email, and telephone.
- Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with all levels in the organization and with outside clients and agencies.
Essential Skills
- Entry-level with an Associate's degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
- 1+ years of electric utility or telecommunications field experience preferred.
- Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) preferred.
- Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office applications desired.
- Proficiency in using AutoCAD or similar programs is preferred.
- Proficient use of engineering software is preferred.
- Clear and valid driver's license required as travel to surrounding utility territories is expected.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Must have a high school diploma.
- Associate's degree in Engineering or a similar discipline is preferred.
Work Environment
The work environment primarily involves outdoor fieldwork. The technician should be comfortable working in various outdoor conditions.
