Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The primary function of the Phlebotomist is to perform various duties, troubleshoot issues, and provide training while recommending improvements to workflow processes. This role requires proficiency in blood draws, specimen labeling, specimen centrifugation, data recording, decontamination, and patient information updates.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
- Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data as required.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the process of venipuncture and specimen collection clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Understand and follow physicians' orders accurately.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Ensure accuracy by checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
- Package specimens for transport and store samples at the required temperature.
- Follow specific protocols for specimen integrity during transport.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to satisfy queries.
Essential Skills
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with specimen processing and data entry.
- Ability to perform 35-40 draws daily.
- Experience working independently in a team environment.
- Experience with patients ranging from adults to geriatrics.
Work Environment
The work environment is an IOP setting where the Phlebotomist will be on their feet most of the time. Training will be provided at the Asheboro location. The position entails working alone and handling patients across various age groups, from adults to geriatrics.
