Job Description
The Pharmacy Technician supports the coverage determination process by reviewing requests from providers, gathering clinical information, and documenting decisions in the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) system. This role focuses on prior authorization activities, clear communication with providers and members, and accurate data entry to ensure timely and appropriate medication access. The position is fully remote and requires strong pharmacy knowledge, attention to detail, and excellent customer service skills.
Responsibilities
- Track and triage coverage determination requests submitted by providers to ensure timely review and processing.
- Assess coverage determination requests to determine when a pharmacist’s clinical review is required.
- Obtain verbal authorizations and request detailed clinical information from prescribers to support coverage decisions.
- Approve coverage determination requests based on defined clinical and benefit criteria.
- Accurately enter and document coverage determination decisions in the PBM system.
- Notify providers and members of coverage determination decisions in a clear and timely manner.
- Respond to client inquiries related to authorization approvals and PBM online applications.
- Refer coverage determination requests for specialty medications to the appropriate delegated vendor or client for processing.
- Contact providers to obtain any additional information needed to complete coverage determination reviews.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy and professionalism in all interactions and documentation.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of experience as a pharmacy technician; retail pharmacy experience is acceptable.
- Active state pharmacy technician license.
- Demonstrated experience with prior authorization or coverage determination processes.
- Strong data entry skills with a focus on accuracy and completeness.
- Proven customer service skills in a pharmacy, healthcare, or managed care setting.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with prescribers, providers, clients, and members.
- Familiarity with pharmacy operations and terminology.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote environment with reliable technology and self-discipline.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification required.
- Pharmacy technician certificate or formal pharmacy technician training.
- Experience working in a managed care organization (MCO) or health care payer environment.
- Ability to type 40+ WPM
Work Environment
This is a fully remote position that requires a quiet, professional workspace and reliable internet access to support continuous use of PBM systems and online applications. Work is performed on a computer for most of the day, with frequent phone and electronic communication with providers, clients, and members.
Post-training, standard shifts start between between 8am-10am PST Monday-Friday with Saturdays every 6-8 weeks.
The environment is fast-paced and detail-oriented, with an emphasis on accuracy, confidentiality, and timely processing of coverage determinations. Professional, business-appropriate attire is expected for any video or external-facing interactions.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Las Vegas, NV.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
