Traffic Engineer


Job Description

The Assistant Traffic Engineer will serve as the primary data collector in the field and arrange and oversee data collection activities. This role involves performing specific portions of broader assignments under the guidance of experienced engineers, conducting standard computations, and carrying out intermediate engineering analyses. Responsibilities also include preparing drawings and visual aids, observing construction activities, maintaining equipment inventory, performing signal design tasks, and conducting quantity estimates. Attending project meetings with senior staff and writing report sections are also key aspects of this position. Additionally, the Assistant Traffic Engineer will be responsible for basic quality assurance and quality control tasks, reviewing their own work as well as that of Assistant Engineers, Junior Engineers, and Technicians, providing limited supervision to technicians, and coordinating with municipalities and agencies regarding background volumes, accident data, signal timings, and more. The role also involves developing and analyzing trip generation and volume.


Responsibilities

  • Collect data in the field and arrange data collection activities.
  • Perform portions of assignments under the supervision of experienced engineers.
  • Conduct standard computations and intermediate engineering analyses.
  • Prepare drawings and visual aids.
  • Observe construction activities.
  • Maintain equipment inventory.
  • Perform signal design tasks and quantity estimates.
  • Attend project meetings with staff.
  • Write report sections and conduct QA/QC tasks.
  • Review work of Assistant Engineers, Junior Engineers, and Technicians.
  • Provide limited supervision to technicians.
  • Coordinate with municipalities/agencies regarding volumes, accident data, and signal timings.
  • Develop and analyze trip generation and volume.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 2 years of experience in a similar engineering role.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Experience with traffic engineering and analysis of roadways and signals.
  • Experience creating and preparing construction documents.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficiency in INroads, AutoTurn, Synchro, Vissim, and GIS.
  • Membership in professional practice organizations such as ASCE.
