Hiring a Phlebotomist Float!
Job Description
This Phlebotomist Float role focuses on delivering high-quality specimen collection and patient care across multiple outpatient and laboratory sites. The position requires an experienced phlebotomist who is confident with venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles, including pediatric patients, and who can work reliably and independently in a fast-paced environment while traveling between locations as needed.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, including on pediatric patients, while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, to patients before performing them.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to ensure specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately and verify that all information is correct.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens appropriately for transport, following all guidelines to maintain specimen quality and safety.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes.
- Follow all procedures specific to each protocol to maintain the integrity of specimens during handling and transport.
- Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality to support consistent coverage across multiple sites.
- Communicate effectively with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel to ensure smooth workflow and excellent patient experience.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of phlebotomy experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or outpatient setting.
- Proficiency in venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience performing blood draws on pediatric patients.
- Strong phlebotomy and specimen collection skills, including blood draws and venipuncture.
- Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test and protocol requirements.
- Attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying orders.
- Ability to follow established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity and accurate records.
- Reliable and punctual work habits with a strong sense of responsibility.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with patients and healthcare staff in a clear and courteous manner.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience in both laboratory and outpatient settings is highly beneficial.
- Comfort traveling regularly between multiple clinical sites.
- Ability to adapt quickly to different locations, teams, and workflows.
- Willingness to learn additional techniques such as heel sticks if needed.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, patients, and specimens efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism and patient-centered care in busy or high-volume settings.
Work Environment
This is a float position that requires regular travel between multiple sites in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, with very occasional coverage in Staten Island. Coverage includes all Brooklyn locations, two sites in Queens (Woodhaven and Ridgewood), and one site in Manhattan. The schedule generally runs Monday through Friday, with availability required between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., and includes every other Saturday from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The role operates in fast-paced outpatient and laboratory settings where phlebotomy, specimen processing, and patient interaction occur throughout the day. The position offers consistent opportunities for overtime for those who are interested in working additional hours. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brooklyn, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.
