Job Title: Lead Carpenter
Job Description
The Lead Skilled Carpenter oversees framing and drywall activities on commercial construction projects, with a focus on metal and wood stud framing, blocking, and high-quality finishing. This role leads field crews, ensures work meets specifications and safety standards, and contributes hands-on to building walls, ceilings, stairs, windows, and doors on a busy university campus environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise crews performing framing work using metal and wood studs on commercial construction projects.
- Oversee and participate in the construction of walls, ceilings, stairs, windows, and door openings to meet project specifications and building codes.
- Perform and direct precise blocking work to support fixtures, finishes, and structural elements.
- Hang and finish drywall to a high standard of quality and appearance.
- Read and interpret blueprints to plan daily tasks, layout work, and verify correct placement of framing and blocking.
- Use carpentry tools such as carpenter’s squares, hammers, screw guns, tape measures, and saws safely and efficiently.
- Coordinate with other trades and team members to maintain workflow and meet project schedules.
- Monitor worksite safety, ensure OSHA standards are followed, and promote a culture of safety within the crew.
- Inspect completed work for accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements.
- Support and mentor less experienced crew members, sharing knowledge of framing, concrete, and finishing techniques.
- Communicate progress, issues, and material needs to site leadership in a timely manner.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of experience in framing and finishing, with a strong focus on blocking.
- Demonstrated expertise in metal and wood stud framing on commercial construction projects.
- Proficiency in hanging and finishing drywall in a commercial environment.
- Expert ability using a carpenter’s square, hammer, screw guns, tape measures, and saws.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and apply them accurately in the field.
- Experience working with concrete, cement, and forming in a construction setting.
- Strong carpentry skills in both rough and finish applications.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and practices on construction sites.
- Ability to lead and coordinate crews of skilled laborers on active job sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- OSHA 10 certification or equivalent safety training.
- Experience on commercial construction projects, preferably in institutional or campus environments.
- Experience in finish carpentry and drywall finishing on larger-scale projects.
- Familiarity with public prevailing wage work environments is a plus.
- Interest in ongoing skills development, including participation in apprenticeship or training programs.

Work Environment
This role operates on commercial construction projects located on a university campus, working primarily within active or developing building environments. Crews typically consist of 5 to 10 team members, fostering a collaborative culture where employees tend to stay long term. Standard hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with potential for overtime based on project needs. The dress code includes work pants or jeans, along with required personal protective equipment such as a hard hat and steel-toe footwear. The work involves typical commercial construction conditions, including exposure to noise, dust, and varying weather when working in partially enclosed spaces, while using standard carpentry and concrete tools and equipment.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Liverpool, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
