Job Title: Engineering Technician (3rd shift)
Job Description
The Engineering Technician supports assigned value streams by providing hands-on manufacturing engineering support on the shop floor. This role sustains process capability, responds to daily production needs, maintains work instructions and technical documentation, and supports equipment and fixture changes. The Engineering Technician acts as a critical bridge between engineering intent and shop-floor execution by performing builds, testing, data collection, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Execute hands-on assembly, build, test, repair, and data collection activities to support manufacturing engineering changes, validations, and daily production stability.
- Follow prints, work instructions, and defined process windows with discipline while troubleshooting basic issues during production.
- Assemble prototypes, fixtures, tooling, and test setups according to approved prints and work instructions, and support first article inspections and line trials.
- Perform dimensional checks and basic metrology, and accurately log data such as yield, cycle time, and defects to enable fact-based engineering decisions.
- Execute preventive maintenance and minor corrective maintenance on production fixtures, tools, and test equipment to sustain process stability and uptime.
- Troubleshoot basic mechanical, electrical, and process issues on the shop floor, isolate faults, and escalate issues with clear and concise technical information.
- Audit work instructions and checklists, provide feedback and redlines, and help maintain accurate technical documentation.
- Maintain strong 5S standards and organization at workstations, labs, benches, and tool cribs to support safe and efficient operations.
- Adjust processes within kitting, cutting, and forming operations, with a heavy focus on heating and pressurization steps.
- Support continuous improvement and kaizen activities aimed at improving safety, quality, efficiency, and process capability.
- Build, maintain, and repair mechanical equipment and assemblies used in production and testing.
- Operate various PLC-controlled production equipment in accordance with established procedures and safety practices.
- File and maintain accurate production, maintenance, and test records to ensure traceability and compliance.
- Work independently on third shift, proactively identifying and completing productive tasks even when direct supervision is not present.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of experience using hand tools and power tools in a manufacturing or mechanical environment.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and experience troubleshooting equipment issues.
- Ability to operate various PLC-controlled production equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to read, write, and interpret technical reports, prints, and work instructions.
- Experience building, maintaining, and repairing mechanical equipment and assemblies.
- Ability to perform basic dimensional checks and use basic metrology tools.
- Comfort working in an environment with some ambiguity and evolving processes.
Work Environment
This is a third shift position with typical hours from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and overtime is generally not expected. You will work in a fast-paced, extremely clean manufacturing environment within a recently remodeled facility that includes modern amenities such as a game room area. The work centers on products that directly affect and protect lives, supporting missions such as combat, rescue, and adventure, and emphasizes thoughtful design and high-impact protection. The production floor uses various PLC-controlled equipment, mechanical assemblies, fixtures, and test setups, with a strong focus on kitting, cutting, forming, heating, and pressurization processes. The culture encourages continuous improvement, personal initiative, and ownership of tasks, particularly on third shift where direct management presence is limited. Processes may not be fully defined, so you should feel comfortable working with some ambiguity and proactively finding productive work from a backlog of tasks when operations are slower. The environment promotes 5S, preventive maintenance, and safety, and expects professional conduct and appropriate attire suitable for a clean, technical manufacturing setting.
