Job Description
The Automotive Test Engineer supports vehicle-level and system-level testing through precise instrumentation, hands-on troubleshooting, and development of test benches that simulate real-world operating conditions. This role focuses on preparing and maintaining test vehicles and laboratory benches, with a strong emphasis on electrical and electromechanical components within modern automotive systems.
Responsibilities
- Instrument test vehicles with sensors, data acquisition systems, and other test equipment to enable accurate vehicle and system-level testing.
- Troubleshoot electrical, electromechanical, and vehicle system issues on both test vehicles and laboratory benches to ensure reliable operation.
- Support vehicle testing activities, including test setup, test execution, monitoring, and resolution of issues that arise during testing.
- Design, build, and modify test benches that accurately simulate vehicle systems and real-world operating conditions.
- Support bench validation efforts and verify that test setups accurately represent vehicle behavior and system responses.
- Collaborate closely with test engineers and cross-functional teams to execute test plans, share findings, and resolve technical issues efficiently.
- Document test setups, bench designs, test configurations, and troubleshooting activities in a clear and organized manner.
- Apply manual machining skills where needed to adapt fixtures, mounts, or components for test vehicles and bench setups.
- Maintain a safe and organized lab and test environment while handling electrical and electromechanical systems.
- Background in automotive testing, vehicle systems, or a closely related engineering field.
- Strong electrical or electromechanical experience, preferably within automotive applications.
- Hands-on experience instrumenting vehicles and integrating sensors, data acquisition systems, and test equipment.
- Proven ability to diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle and system-level issues in test or lab environments.
- Experience with bench design, bench build, or other lab-based testing environments.
- Practical troubleshooting skills applied to electrical, electromechanical, and vehicle systems.
- Manual machining skills to support test bench and fixture fabrication or modification.
- Automotive test engineering experience with a focus on electrical systems.
- Experience working with both vehicle testing and lab or bench testing environments.
- Familiarity with simulation or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) style bench setups.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering and test teams.
- Strong documentation skills for recording test setups, procedures, and findings.
The role operates primarily in a combination of automotive test lab and workshop environments, working directly with test vehicles, electrical and electromechanical systems, and custom-built test benches. You will use sensors, data acquisition systems, and various test instruments, as well as basic machining tools to create or adapt fixtures and components. Work typically involves hands-on tasks around vehicles and laboratory benches, with a focus on safety, organization, and methodical test execution. The position requires comfort working around automotive systems, test equipment, and lab-based setups in a collaborative, engineering-focused environment.
