Job Description
The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in the success of the department by ensuring an efficient flow and a welcoming atmosphere for patients. The position entails both administrative and clinical tasks, including maintaining patient records, preparing treatment rooms, and assisting Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers. This role requires managing daily schedules and ensuring timely documentation within the electronic health record system to facilitate smooth patient flow.
Responsibilities
- Record patient’s medical history, vital statistics, clinical summary, and health maintenance.
- Prepare treatment rooms for patient examination, ensuring they are neat, clean, and stocked.
- Interview patients to gather medical information and measure vital signs, weight, height, allergies, and current medications.
- Guide patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the Physician.
- Provide medically appropriate instructions to patients under the direction of a Physician or Advanced Practice Provider.
- Upload documentation to the EMR and ensure all related patient information is in the electronic record prior to appointments.
- Prepare FMLA, prior authorizations, and disability paperwork.
- Coordinate outside care for patients, including dialysis, SNFs, outpatient infusion clinics, foster care homes, home health, and home infusion agencies under guidance.
- Collaborate closely with other medical assistants and ancillary staff.
- Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers by following established standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Schedule new and follow-up appointments.
- Clean and sanitize patients’ rooms.
Essential Skills
- 2+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant with understanding of back office documentation such as Rx refills, lab requests, and FMLA paperwork.
- Experience with EMR/EHR systems.
- Ability to perform manual vital sign measurements.
- Compassionate care abilities, particularly in end-of-life care and patient loss.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- National certification is highly preferred, with a certification process within 30-60 days being acceptable.
- GED or high school diploma required.
- Patient-forward thinking and sympathy for patient care.
