Job Title: Phlebotomist I


Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various duties related to specimen collection and processing. This includes troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements.


Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens.
  • Record maintenance data and conduct decontamination procedures.
  • Update patient information accurately.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process to patients.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Understand and follow all physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport and store them at required temperatures.
  • Ensure specimens are placed in appropriate containers and labeled correctly.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual departmental training sessions.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
  • At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of related experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques.
  • 1+ years of experience in a similar role.

Work Environment

The position is set in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. Employees are expected to comply with all safety regulations, including OSHA and DEP standards. The role may require handling of specimens in various conditions and using specific techniques and equipment. Professional attire is expected.
