Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and experienced Survey Party Chief to join our dynamic team in South Carolina. The successful candidate will collaborate with the survey party crew chief on a variety of projects, including DOT, commercial, federal, government, industrial, power companies, and warehouses. This role requires someone who is skilled in locating, reviewing, and researching job locations to identify significant land changes affecting surveys.
Responsibilities
- Supervise the work of the survey crew, evaluate priorities, and coordinate and organize work efforts.
- Ensure the standard of work performed and derive necessary field calculations from completed work.
- Maintain instruments and equipment, ensuring angles, distances, and other collected information are accurate and conform to regulations and standards.
- Coordinate findings with engineering personnel, clients, and others concerned with projects.
- Research previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys.
- Determine methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control.
- Keep accurate notes, records, and sketches to describe work performed.
- Complete daily logs, expense reports, and safety forms, ensuring all crew members follow safety procedures.
- Consult with computer operators and review the final production of work performed.
Essential Skills
- Familiarity with commonly used surveying terms and the use and care of survey tools and field equipment for measuring, sighting, and leveling.
- Proficiency in operating survey equipment such as Total Station/Data Collector, Level, and various Global Positioning System (GPS) methods.
- Experience in surveying construction staking, boundary, ALTA surveys.
- Ability to lead a team of surveyors.
- Ability to survey independently, including land surveying, topography, and construction stakeout.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 3-5 years of experience as a party crew chief preferred, although candidates with less experience are welcome to apply.
- Good technical skills, including process-oriented traits such as being steady, helpful, analytical, a problem solver, methodical, consistent, detail-oriented, precise, and structured.
- Valid driver's license, acceptable motor vehicle record, cleared background check, and negative drug test result.
Work Environment
The role involves some overnight travel and requires extensive walking outside year-round through various terrains and extreme weather conditions. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM, with potential overtime depending on project load, averaging 50-60 hours per week. The position is based in Charleston, with approximately 50% travel involved. Surveyors must be willing to travel if necessary and will report to the Charleston office daily to coordinate with the surveying team. The role may require working in environments with venomous snakes and insects, standing for long periods, walking long distances, traversing different types of terrain, and lifting and carrying up to 75 lbs. Additionally, surveyors can take the company truck home.
