This role bridges design and production, ensuring that construction plans are clear, buildable, and aligned with quality standards and continuous improvement goals.
Responsibilities
- Review architectural drawings and interpret design intent to create precise structural shop drawings for residential homes.
- Use AutoCAD to develop detailed plans, sections, and elevations that guide the manufacturing and carpentry teams during construction.
- Translate design concepts into practical, buildable details that support efficient production and assembly in the field.
- Collaborate closely with the manufacturing team to ensure drawings are clear, complete, and suitable for use on the shop floor and job site.
- Incorporate quality standards into all drawings and documentation to support consistent, high-quality construction outcomes.
- Support continuous improvement by identifying drawing or design changes that can streamline construction and reduce errors or rework.
- Assist in spotting inefficiencies in current building processes and propose drawing or layout modifications to improve workflow.
- Work with a small team building multiple spec homes and adjust drawings as needed based on feedback from supervisors and carpenters.
- Maintain organized drawing files and documentation so the team can easily access the latest approved versions.
- Apply basic carpentry and construction knowledge when developing details to ensure they are practical and aligned with field conditions.
- Support supervisory and production staff by answering drawing-related questions and clarifying design details as needed.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD for creating and modifying structural and shop drawings.
- Ability to read, interpret, and produce construction blueprints and technical drawings.
- Basic understanding of structural and residential construction concepts, including carpentry-related details.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting established quality standards in all drawings.
- Ability to work in a production-oriented environment and support continuous improvement efforts.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with supervisors, carpenters, and production staff.
- Comfort working in a setting focused on lean manufacturing principles and efficiency.
- Openness to learning and taking direction, including for candidates straight out of technical school.
- Technical school education or equivalent training in drafting, architectural technology, engineering technology, or a related field.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing concepts and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience or coursework related to structural drafting, residential design, or construction is beneficial.
- Exposure to production environments or construction sites is an advantage.
- Basic supervisory or leadership skills are helpful in supporting small-team coordination.
- Understanding of quality standards and how to apply them in a manufacturing or construction context.
You will join a growing team that is building an innovative, efficient homebuilding operation from the ground up. The organization focuses on continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and high-quality standards, offering you the chance to directly influence how homes are designed and built. As the operation ramps up from a small team to a larger workforce, you will have opportunities to grow your skills, contribute ideas, and see the impact of your work in real, tangible projects. This environment values practical problem-solving, collaboration, and the drive to make processes faster, smarter, and more efficient.
Work Environment
The role follows a standard schedule of approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will primarily work seated in a job trailer located inside a hoop building on or near the construction site. The setting is closely connected to active homebuilding, with a small team currently focused on constructing several spec homes and rapidly improving the process. The operation uses AutoCAD and blueprint-based workflows and emphasizes lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and efficient production. As the team refines processes and scales up, the pace of work is expected to increase, with an ambitious goal of building a home from start to finish within one week.
