Job Description
The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
- Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
- Decontaminate work areas and update patient information as needed.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections, such as urine or fecal, clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understand and execute all physician orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Ensure test requisitions or computer labels match scripts 100% accurately.
- Package specimens for transport, storing them according to required temperatures.
- Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, label accurately, and follow procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the specimens.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department training sessions.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.
- Knowledge of healthcare and laboratory procedures.
