Job Description

The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
• Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
• Decontaminate work areas and update patient information as needed.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections, such as urine or fecal, clearly and courteously.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand and execute all physician orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Ensure test requisitions or computer labels match scripts 100% accurately.
• Package specimens for transport, storing them according to required temperatures.
• Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, label accurately, and follow procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the specimens.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department training sessions.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.
• Knowledge of healthcare and laboratory procedures.
