Job Description
The Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting all utility systems that support production in a food manufacturing facility. This role ensures that water heaters, refrigeration systems, compressed air systems, HVAC equipment, water treatment processes, and related infrastructure operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory requirements. The technician plays a critical role in supporting continuous manufacturing operations, upholding food safety standards, and ensuring overall facility reliability.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on utility systems, including water heaters, refrigeration units, compressed air equipment, HVAC systems, water treatment systems, pumps, valves, and distribution piping.
- Monitor utility performance, interpret system data, and make necessary adjustments to meet production and food safety requirements.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control-system issues affecting utility and facility equipment.
- Maintain accurate documentation within the facility’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and ensure proper recordkeeping for regulatory compliance.
- Support compliance with FDA, HACCP, GMP, SQF/BRC, environmental regulations, and internal quality and safety standards.
- Assist with the installation, commissioning, and qualification of new utility equipment in the facility.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on energy efficiency, equipment reliability, and system optimization.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide timely corrective maintenance to minimize equipment downtime and production interruptions.
- Follow all facility safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, arc flash safety, and chemical handling protocols.
- Manage external contractors and technical service providers as necessary to maintain the facility’s utility equipment and infrastructure.
- Provide input to support the facility’s capital program and investment strategy for utility equipment and facility systems.
- Complete work orders and general maintenance tasks as assigned to support overall facility operations.
- Support and maintain boiler systems, compressor systems, chillers, and associated controls as part of overall facility utilities.
- Assist with wastewater treatment system operation and maintenance, as applicable to the facility.
- 2–5 years of experience in utility or maintenance roles within a food, beverage, or industrial manufacturing environment.
- At least 2 years of facilities maintenance experience in a food and beverage or industrial setting.
- Working knowledge of industrial water heaters, refrigeration systems (including glycol systems), HVAC systems, compressed air systems, and water treatment processes.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control-system components.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, P&IDs, schematics, and equipment manuals.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Experience with valves and valve repair, hydraulics, pneumatics, and facility maintenance practices.
- Understanding of boiler systems, compressor systems, chillers, and related industrial utility equipment.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and equipment operation, where applicable.
- Familiarity with safety procedures including Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, arc flash safety, and safe chemical handling.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical or vocational training in industrial maintenance, HVAC, refrigeration, or a related field is preferred.
- EPA 608 Refrigeration Certification is preferred.
- Wastewater treatment certification is preferred where required by the facility.
- Experience with instantaneous water heaters, chillers, glycol systems, HVAC systems, and screw chillers.
- Experience working with FDA, HACCP, GMP, SQF/BRC, and environmental regulatory requirements in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to manage and coordinate external contractors and technical service providers.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and control issues.
- Ability to handle multiple work orders, prioritize tasks, and support general building and facility maintenance.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, startup manufacturing environment with evolving processes and equipment.

Work Environment
This role is based in a food manufacturing environment within a new, startup plant. You will work on-site around production equipment, utility systems, and facility infrastructure, supporting the full building and its utilities. The position involves hands-on work with industrial water heaters, refrigeration systems, HVAC equipment, compressed air systems, chillers, glycol systems, boilers, pumps, valves, and water and wastewater treatment systems. You will help bring equipment into the facility, support installation and setup, and take responsibility for building and utility maintenance across the entire site. The environment is fast-paced and dynamic, with a strong focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and food safety standards. Work may involve standing for extended periods, working in mechanical rooms or around operating equipment, and occasionally working in hot, cold, or noisy areas typical of a manufacturing facility.
