Service Electrician
Job Description
The Service Electrician will diagnose and repair electrical issues on a wide range of machines, equipment, and building systems while delivering professional, customer-focused service. This role involves field-based troubleshooting, installation, and small remodel or warranty work, with the opportunity to support commercial projects when service demand is lighter. The position is ideal for an experienced electrician who enjoys complex problem-solving and may be interested in growing into a future leadership role within the service department.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues with machines, equipment, and building systems in a variety of commercial and industrial environments.
- Install LED lighting, including converting existing fixtures and changing out light poles to LED solutions.
- Rough-in outlets and light fixtures in multiple rooms, including projects involving 30–40 rooms at a time.
- Change out and service generators, electrical controls, HVAC-related electrical components, motor starters, and VFDs.
- Perform small remodel work and warranty work on previous projects, including returning to recently completed jobs to make repairs or adjustments.
- Review daily service tickets (“green tickets”) at the shop and plan work for the day based on assigned service calls.
- Travel to job sites, troubleshoot and diagnose issues on-site, discuss findings and solutions with the service leadership, and implement approved repairs or recommendations.
- Recommend next steps when immediate repair is not feasible, including proposing additional work, parts, or follow-up visits.
- Complete accurate and thorough service reports documenting work performed, parts used, and recommendations for future service.
- Collaborate with the service department to develop effective solutions for complex electrical problems and support continuous improvement of service processes.
- Support commercial electrical work on local projects when the service department is experiencing slower periods.
- Use scissor lifts, boom lifts, and other equipment safely and efficiently when required for elevated work.
- Follow all applicable safety regulations and best practices, including OSHA-related guidelines, while using appropriate hand tools and equipment.
- Represent the company professionally on customer sites, communicating clearly and confidently with clients about issues, solutions, and timelines.
- Contribute to the growth and development of the service department and, if desired, prepare for potential advancement into a future service leadership role.
Essential Skills
- Approximately 10 or more years of experience in the electrical service field, with strong hands-on exposure to troubleshooting and repair.
- Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting, including the ability to think through complex issues, diagnose root causes, and identify effective solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in electrical repair and installation work in industrial and commercial environments.
- Experience working with generators, electrical controls, HVAC electrical components, motor starters, and VFDs.
- Journeyman-level electrical skills; a journeyman license is preferred.
- Ability to safely operate scissor lifts and boom lifts, with prior lift certification or experience operating lifts.
- Familiarity with construction and renovation environments and the ability to perform commercial electrical work as needed.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety practices and the ability to work safely with hand tools and electrical equipment.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills, with the ability to interact comfortably and confidently with clients on-site.
- High level of independence, reliability, and accountability in managing daily service tickets and completing field assignments.
- Valid driving record that meets company standards for operating a company vehicle.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Lift certification is ideal; prior certification or hands-on experience operating lifts is acceptable.
- OSHA certifications are preferred and demonstrate a strong commitment to safety.
- Journeyman electrician license is preferred and strongly valued.
- Experience and comfort working on new construction projects as an electrician.
- Ownership of basic electrical hand tools; specialty tools will be provided.
- Interest in growing with the service department and helping to build and strengthen its capabilities over time.
- Desire or openness to eventually step into a service leadership role as current leadership approaches retirement, though this is not required.
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance and present oneself well in customer-facing environments.
- Comfort working a standard on-call rotation for service work as needed.
- Ability to adapt to a mix of service calls, warranty work, small remodels, and commercial projects depending on department workload.
Why Work Here?
You will join a team that rewards performance with eligibility for yearly bonuses and supports long-term financial security through a 401(k) plan with a 5% company match. The organization invests heavily in employee well-being, offering medical insurance that is 100% paid for both the employee and their family after an initial eligibility period. You will receive a company truck and gas card after an initial onboarding period, making field work more convenient and efficient. Paid time off starts at one week and accrues up to two weeks, supporting work-life balance. The company values growth and continuity, providing a clear opportunity to grow within the service department and potentially step into a leadership role in the future, while working in a stable, supportive environment that appreciates experienced trades professionals.
Work Environment
The work environment is primarily field-based, with electricians starting their day at the shop to review service tickets and then traveling to various customer sites. A typical day begins by reporting to the shop, reviewing assigned tickets that outline the day’s service calls, and coordinating with service leadership on priorities. You will then drive to multiple job sites to troubleshoot issues, discuss solutions with the service leadership team by phone or in person as needed, and complete repairs or recommend next steps. Examples of work include diagnosing flashing machine lights, resolving circuit issues, converting light poles to LED, roughing-in outlets and fixtures in multiple rooms, changing out generators and electrical controls, and performing small remodel or warranty work on recently completed projects. When the service department is less busy, you may work on local commercial electrical projects, often in active construction or renovation environments. The role involves regular use of hand tools, scissor lifts, and boom lifts, and requires adherence to safety practices consistent with OSHA guidelines. During the first few months, you will typically report to the shop daily and use company resources from there; after this initial period, you will be assigned a company truck and gas card for greater autonomy in the field. The dress and appearance expectations emphasize a clean, professional presentation that aligns with frequent customer interaction and on-site client work.
