Job Description
This role focuses on precision machining work as an inside machinist, operating conventional lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, and presses. The position involves a high volume of shaft work, as well as boring and bushing of bearing housings, which make up a significant portion of the workload. You will contribute to producing accurate, high-quality components in a shop environment located in Chesapeake.
Responsibilities
- Operate conventional engine lathes safely and efficiently to machine shafts and other cylindrical components to precise specifications.
- Set up and run horizontal and vertical milling machines to perform accurate machining operations on a variety of parts.
- Use presses and related shop equipment to complete machining, assembly, or fitting operations as required.
- Perform shaft work, including turning, facing, threading, and other lathe operations, ensuring dimensional accuracy and quality finishes.
- Bore and bush bearing housings, maintaining proper fits, tolerances, and alignment according to job requirements.
- Interpret and follow work instructions, drawings, or specifications to plan machining steps and verify finished dimensions.
- Inspect parts during and after machining using appropriate measuring tools to ensure they meet quality and tolerance requirements.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow shop safety procedures at all times.
- Collaborate with other shop personnel to coordinate work, resolve issues, and ensure timely completion of machining jobs.
- Perform routine checks and basic maintenance on machines to support reliable and consistent operation.
- Proven ability to operate conventional lathes in a shop environment.
- Hands-on experience operating horizontal and vertical milling machines.
- Ability to safely operate presses and related shop equipment.
- Demonstrated experience with shaft work, including turning and finishing operations.
- Experience boring and bushing bearing housings with close attention to tolerances.
- Ability to read and follow job instructions or basic drawings to complete machining tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
- Ability to work on-site in a machine shop located in Chesapeake.
- Previous experience as an inside machinist in a shop environment.
- Familiarity with using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining principles.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other shop personnel.

Work Environment
This position is based in a machine shop located in Chesapeake. You will work primarily indoors in a traditional shop environment, operating conventional lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, and presses. Standard shop attire and appropriate personal protective equipment are required to ensure safety and comfort while performing daily tasks.

This is a Contract position based out of Chesapeake, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $40.00/hr.
