Experience Required
- Minimum: 4 years of commercial or naval experience as a First-Class Welder.
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including confined spaces aboard ships and in shop settings.
- Comfortable climbing ladders and stairs.
Work Environment
- Shipboard and sub-assembly work.
- Must adhere to OSHA regulations for shipbuilding.
- All tools, PPE, and FRCs provided—no need to bring your own!
Welding Qualifications
Before starting work, candidates must pass the following without training at the Newport News Welding School:
- SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding): All positions (2G, 3G, 4G)
- FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding): All positions (2G, 3G, 4G)
- GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding): Horizontal (2G)
- Air Carbon Arc Gouging Proficiency
Additional tests include:
- Visual Inspection of Welds Level I
- Welders Vision Test
Note: If a candidate fails testing or does not complete 30 days of work, a $500 reimbursement applies.
Required Skills
- Multi-pass fillet and butt welds using SMAW, GMAW, FCAW.
- Oxygen/Propane Heating Torch.
- Air Carbon Arc Gouging.
- Ability to use fillet and butt weld gauges.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $45.00/hr.
