Job Title: Segment Inspector


Job Description

The Segment Inspector will gain valuable experience in both field and office settings. You will learn to design and prepare construction drawings for various projects, including civil, transportation, mechanical, water/wastewater, and utility projects. This role offers an overview of opportunities within the company, encompassing civil, road and bridge design, industrial, commercial, utilities, and public sector work. You will collaborate with a diverse group of talented leaders and build relationships across the company, aligning your skills and interests with various engineering disciplines.


Responsibilities

  • Inspect and monitor contractual fieldwork, including excavations, drainage facilities, concrete placement, steel and precast member erections, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and structures of moderate complexity.
  • Verify construction of Roadway and Highway to ensure compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications and standards, special provisions, and contract documents.
  • Advise contractors of deficiencies, issues, failing tests, and noncompliance, providing reference documents for conclusions.
  • Take field measurements of materials placed and record production and test results.
  • Perform materials testing, such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density, and control strips for dense aggregate roller patterns.
  • Review placement and perform materials tests on concrete deliveries in accordance with VDOT and ACI standards.
  • Make cylinders for delivery to labs.
  • Review and inspect asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks.
  • Review and inspect reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement for more complex and non-routine structures, and sign pour cards.
  • Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Oversee and enforce the installation of erosion/siltation controls and highway work zones and traffic control devices.
  • Prepare daily diaries, inspection checklists, and materials testing forms.
  • Receive materials delivery tickets for compliance and submission to contractor.
  • Take assignments and direction from Quality Control Lead Management and Inspectors.
  • Track deficiencies and nonconformance and document corrective actions in daily work activity prep meetings, actively participating in kickoff meetings for work activities.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in construction inspection and materials testing.
  • Ability to perform general labor duties such as working outdoors under various conditions.
  • Skill in inspecting concrete and construction materials.
  • Certifications in concrete inspection.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma.
  • Ability to navigate up and down five flights of stairs.
  • Capability to lift items up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficiency in recording inspection data using a tablet.

Work Environment

The work environment is primarily outdoors and subject to various weather conditions, including cold, hot, rain, and snow. Opportunities for overtime are available, with a night shift differential of an extra $1.50 per hour for night shift hours.
