Job Description
As an Estimator, you will review proposal specifications, drawings, customer standards, unit billing standards, and attend pre-bid meetings to determine the scope of work and required contents of estimates. You will prepare disciplined estimates by calculating complete take-off of the scope of work, provide breakdowns, and share estimate information with the Project Manager. You will handle various estimate types, including unit price, lump sum, and time & expense, and build or update compatible unit values.
Responsibilities
- Review proposal specifications, drawings, and customer standards to determine the scope of work.
- Attend pre-bid meetings to gather essential information.
- Prepare disciplined estimates by calculating complete take-offs of the scope of work.
- Provide breakdowns of estimates and deliver estimate information to the Project Manager.
- Handle various estimate types, including unit price, lump sum, and time & expense.
- Build and update compatible unit values.
- Upload estimates in estimating/project management software following work breakdown structure process.
- Obtain feedback from general foreman and management to consider additional factors on the baseline estimate.
- Collaborate with accounting and management for updating customer time & expense rates.
- Read and understand union labor agreements for developing labor rates.
- Improve and update computer-estimating system and maintain estimating system prices and labor.
- Submit bids and proposals on projects estimated after approval.
- Introduce cost-saving ideas through redesign and Value Engineering opportunities.
Essential Skills
- At least three years of experience as an estimator in a utility construction company.
- Experience in project management, construction management, utility estimating software, bidding, and estimation.
- Proficiency in estimating software such as Procore.
- Ability to read utility, electrical, mechanical, architectural drawings, and project documents.
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft products such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and basic navigation of Access or similar project management software.
- Knowledge of standard safety procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School education required.
- Two-year technical degree preferred or equivalent experience.
- Estimating experience preferred but not required.
- Positive safety attitude and personal integrity.
- Ability to think conceptually and apply practical solutions.
- Capabilities to self-start and display a solid work ethic.
- Talent to act decisively and assertively through positive communication.
- High attention to detail and following procedures.
- Basic knowledge in electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental, and construction.
