Job Description
The Transformer Winder operates specialized winding machinery to produce high-quality coils in a variety of sizes and construction types for mining, commercial, industrial, and utility applications. This role follows detailed engineering drawings and manufacturing standards to ensure each coil meets strict technical and quality requirements, while supporting a safe, efficient, and collaborative production environment.
Responsibilities
- Operate winding machines to produce coils for various transformer applications, including mining, commercial, industrial, and utility use.
- Work from verbal and written instructions, engineering drawings, specifications, design prints, and manufacturing standards to complete each job accurately.
- Pull required inventory and materials from the warehouse according to work orders and job numbers.
- Set up winding machines with the appropriate mandrels based on coil design and work order requirements.
- Set up wire racks with the required winding conductors for each job.
- Cut and stage materials such as paper insulation, ducts, taps, lead buss, and related components as specified in the work order.
- Wind both rectangular and circular shaped coils to precise specifications.
- Perform winding using various construction types including barrel, single and multi-conductor disc, and helix windings.
- Handle a wide range of conductor types including rectangular, strip, foil, round, and multiple continuous transposed conductors.
- Perform brazing and welding on leads, taps, and connection points for both aluminum and copper conductors.
- Perform conductor bending for leads, cross backs, and transpositions as required by the design.
- Perform taping and wrapping of leads, insulation, and ducts to ensure proper insulation and mechanical integrity.
- Use tension devices to properly tension winding conductors and maintain consistent winding quality.
- Recognize conductor and winding defects, and promptly report findings to the supervisor for corrective action.
- Assist the supervisor and provide support to other employees as needed to maintain workflow and production efficiency.
- Repair coils at various stages of manufacturing and, when required, in certain field situations.
- Perform quality control checks on coils to verify that manufacturing standards and engineering requirements are met.
- Cross-train in other manufacturing processes and remain flexible to work in other departments as production demands require.
- Follow all safety guidelines and contribute to maintaining a safe work environment for yourself and others.
- Work independently or as part of a team to complete tasks within required time frames and according to production demands.
- Follow verbal and written instructions accurately to ensure consistent and reliable production output.
Essential Skills
- Experience operating production or winding machinery in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, design prints, and written work instructions.
- Mechanical aptitude and hands-on skills with tools and equipment used in coil winding and assembly.
- Proficiency in using hand and power tools, including cutting tools, for production and assembly tasks.
- Ability to perform brazing and welding on aluminum and copper leads, taps, and connection points.
- Skill in winding rectangular and circular coils using various construction types such as barrel, disc, and helix windings.
- Ability to work with multiple conductor types, including rectangular, strip, foil, round, and continuous transposed conductors.
- Attention to detail and ability to identify defects in conductors and windings during production.
- Capability to perform quality checks to ensure coils meet manufacturing and engineering standards.
- Ability to lift light to moderate items safely and to bend and stoop as required by production tasks.
- Comfort using tension devices and other specialized equipment to control winding quality.
- Ability to work according to production demands and meet required timelines.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others to complete tasks.
- Basic to moderate computer skills to support production and documentation requirements.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in general production, assembly, or mechanical roles in a manufacturing setting.
- Experience in extrusion, plastics, or similar production processes is beneficial.
- Previous experience with quality checks and inspection in a production environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in working with machinery and power tools.
- Flexibility to be cross-trained in other manufacturing processes and work in different departments as needed.
- Strong sense of safety awareness and commitment to maintaining a safe workplace.
- Good communication skills to coordinate with supervisors and team members.

Work Environment
This role is based in a clean, well-lit manufacturing facility equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment. You will work on a first shift schedule, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with overtime available based on production needs. The environment emphasizes safety, organization, and quality, with access to modern tools, winding machines, cutting tools, and hand and power tools. The production floor is designed for efficient workflow and collaboration, allowing you to focus on precision work in a professional and well-maintained setting
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Beaver, WV.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
