We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee position in the Separations and Bioprocessing Group within the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory. The successful applicant will conduct advanced research to develop, evaluate, and scale efficient and cost-effective bioprocess technologies that improve resource and energy utilization, reduce dependence on imported materials, and strengthen national energy security. The Postdoctoral Appointee will contribute significantly to ongoing research efforts in resource valorization. Specifically, the candidate will optimize, and scale up (0.5 to 400 L) arrested methanogenesis systems to convert diverse low-value organic waste streams into value-added products (e.g., carboxylic acids), and support the development and scale-up of advanced bioleaching processes for recovery of critical minerals from secondary materials The candidate will design and execute experiments; operate, monitor, and troubleshoot bench- and pilot-scale bioreactors; collect, analyze, and interpret biological, chemical, and microbial omics data; and integrate results to evaluate process performance and scalability. The candidate will contribute to process modeling and techno-economic assessment as appropriate. The candidate will work independently under general guidance, collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment, and prepare technical reports, publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present results at scientific conferences. The primary responsibility is to perform specimen preparation and clinical test analyses to acceptable levels of analytic performance under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager in a CLIA certified laboratory.Responsibilities<ul><li>Accession clinical/commercial samples, barcode, and enter essential data onto a cloud-based HIPAA-compliant patient management platform.</li><li>Process clinical samples from a variety of sources including human tissues, blood, and urine, as part of a highly cooperative team.</li><li>Enter necessary data into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to ensure precise sample tracking and full inventory control of reagents.</li><li>Participate in monthly Quality Management Systems (QMS) meetings and present activities and metric outcomes.</li><li>Develop and implement remedial activity plans and suggest quality improvements.</li><li>Maintain proficiency in the laboratory’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for clinical testing and understand quality control parameters.</li><li>Provide hands-on back-up support to other laboratory personnel in operational clinical tests.</li><li>Maintain laboratory records, including records for proficiency testing samples.</li><li>Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.</li><li>Document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.</li><li>Maintain a clean and safe work environment.</li><li>Understand and comply with all laboratory policies and procedures.</li></ul>Essential Skills<ul><li>Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.</li><li>2-3 years of experience in a clinical/commercial laboratory environment preferred.</li><li>Experience in molecular biology methodologies, particularly RT-PCR.</li><li>ASCP certification preferred.</li></ul>Additional Skills &amp; Qualifications<ul><li>Clear understanding of patient confidentiality, as outlined in HIPAA.</li><li>Familiarity with RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-based methodologies.</li><li>Proficiency in basic laboratory skills (solution preparation, pipetting with single and multichannel pipettes, and robotic liquid handlers).</li><li>Familiarity with MS Word, MS Excel, and Laboratory Inventory Management Systems.</li><li>Excellent problem-solving skills and effective verbal and written communication skills.</li><li>Ability to work collaboratively, exercise good judgment, and maintain clear records.</li></ul>Work EnvironmentThe work is performed onsite in a laboratory environment with some shift work required. The role involves medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
