What Is STAR-Friendly and Why Does It Matter?
You may have heard the term "STAR talent" floating around workforce conversations lately. If you're not sure what it means or why it's relevant to you, you're in the right place.
What Does STAR Mean?
STAR stands for Skilled Through Alternative Routes. STARs are workers who have built real, valuable skills outside of a traditional four-year college degree. That includes people who learned through community college, trade or vocational programs, military service, apprenticeships, bootcamps, certifications, or simply years of hands-on work experience.
STARs aren't a niche group. According to Opportunity@Work, STARs represent more than 70 million workers in the U.S., making up roughly half of the entire workforce. These are experienced and capable professionals who sometimes miss out on job opportunities simply because of how their talent was developed or antiquated degree requirements.
"At Opportunity@Work, we believe that embedding STAR-inclusive data and logic into the platforms where hiring happens is the key to rewiring the labor market. By integrating our research on the mobility pathways where STARs have already found success, CareerCircle is helping to make skills—not pedigree—the default signal of qualification. This feature removes the 'paper ceiling' for millions of workers, allowing STARs to quickly and confidently translate their valuable skills and experience into higher-wage opportunities."

There Are More Jobs Open to STARs Than You Might Think
A big misconception is that most good jobs require a degree. Many roles are filled by STARs and are well-suited for candidates who have built their expertise outside of a traditional academic path. STARs are found across nearly every industry and at every stage of a career, from entry-level roles all the way to management positions.
Recognizing which jobs are open to STARs is a key part of helping people find the right opportunities. That's where CareerCircle’s tools and data come in.
CareerCircle's Commitment to STARs and Employers Who Hire STARs
CareerCircle has long believed that skills matter more than credentials on paper. Supporting STARs has been a core part of that mission, and it's what inspired us to make meaningful enhancements to our platform to make the STAR job search experience better than ever.
Introducing STARs Opportunity Tagged Jobs
The biggest update we're excited to share is STARs Match, a new feature that flags jobs that are a strong fit for STAR candidates directly in search results.
Here's how it works: CareerCircle uses data from Opportunity@Work to identify jobs where STARs find success, based on two criteria:
-
25% or more of people in that role are STARs
-
The role is classified by Opportunity@Work as either an origin role (great for entering a field) or a gateway role (ideal for advancing a career)
These labels take the guesswork out of the search. Instead of sifting through hundreds of listings and wondering whether a degree requirement will be a dealbreaker, STARs can quickly spot opportunities where people skilled through alternative routes are already succeeding.
