Job Description
This position focuses on fabricating and welding structural steel assemblies with a high level of precision. You will work from detailed blueprints to lay out, cut, fit, and weld structural components within tight tolerances, contributing to the production of prefabricated medical modules in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret structural steel blueprints to determine layout, dimensions, and welding requirements.
- Pass a 3G 1-inch plate test per AWS D1.1 using FCAW to demonstrate welding proficiency.
- Lay out, cut, fit, and weld structural steel components to within 1/16-inch tolerance.
- Cut miters and copes using a hand torch to prepare steel for assembly.
- Drill holes and fabricate steel subassemblies according to engineering drawings.
- Perform stick welding as the primary process and complete MIG welding as needed.
- Operate or assist with the operation of overhead cranes and forklifts to move and position steel safely, using proper certification where required.
- Unload, organize, and number steel components in accordance with drawings and production schedules.
- Verify alignment and dimensions using lasers, levels, and precision measuring tools.
- Work effectively within an assembly line process where bathroom modules move through sequential fabrication stages.
- Proven structural steel or related fabrication experience.
- FCAW welding experience with the ability to pass a 3G test on 1-inch plate per AWS D1.1.
- Strong ability to read and work from structural steel blueprints.
- Demonstrated experience with steel fit-up, including layout, cutting, and assembly.
- Proficiency in stick welding with the flexibility to perform MIG welding when required.
- Ability to cut steel accurately using appropriate tools, including hand torches.
- Experience cutting, drilling, and assembling steel components for structural applications.
- Familiarity with operating or assisting with overhead cranes and forklifts, with required certifications.
- Competence using precision measuring tools such as lasers, levels, and tape measures to verify alignment and tolerances.
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain tight tolerances in a production environment.
- Experience working in an industrial or manufacturing setting with assembly line processes.
- Comfort working with flux core and MIG welding processes.
- Ability to organize and label materials according to drawings and production requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address fit-up and alignment issues during fabrication.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other fabricators, welders, and production staff.

Work Environment
This role is based in a large industrial manufacturing facility in Bessemer that produces prefabricated bathroom modules for the medical industry. The production floor operates as an assembly line, where modules move through sequential fabrication and finishing stages. The facility is non-climate controlled, so conditions can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. You will work around cranes, forklifts, welding equipment, cutting tools, and precision measuring devices in a busy, collaborative shop environment with over 100 employees and plans for continued growth.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bessemer, AL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00/hr.
