Job Description
The Chemical Technician will use 5 to 10 years of hands-on laboratory and industrial experience to support chemists and chemical engineers in developing, testing, and improving chemical products and processes. This role focuses on testing chemicals for impurities, performing quality assurance, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, and assessing environmental impact. The technician will conduct regular testing to determine the chemical composition of products or samples, support safe and efficient production, and help maintain a reliable and compliant laboratory operation.
Responsibilities
- Assist chemists and chemical engineers in developing and testing chemical products by performing routine and specialized laboratory analyses.
- Test chemicals for impurities and perform quality assurance checks to verify that products meet required specifications and regulatory standards.
- Ensure that all chemicals produced comply with applicable regulations and contribute to the assessment of their environmental impact.
- Perform regular testing to determine the chemical composition of products or samples and document findings clearly and accurately.
- Track inventory of chemicals, reagents, and consumables, prioritize orders based on operational needs, and ensure materials are available for ongoing work.
- Maintain, clean, and calibrate laboratory equipment and instrumentation, and document procedures and observations during each chemical test.
- Follow environmental regulations and stay current with newly published safety protocols from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFRA).
- Prepare chemical solutions according to specifications, complete chemical orders, and store solutions safely in accordance with different temperature and handling requirements.
- Conduct laboratory tests to confirm that chemicals are safe to use, record results, and troubleshoot issues for further assessment and resolution.
- Compile and interpret laboratory test results, identify and correct potential anomalies, and escalate concerns when necessary.
- Monitor chemical processes and collaborate with appropriate personnel to resolve production issues and optimize process performance.
- Produce and retrieve graphical or data-based results to share with laboratory leadership and more senior technical personnel.
- Sterilize work surfaces and equipment before use, maintain a clean and orderly laboratory, and replace worn or damaged equipment as needed.
- Train new technicians on laboratory procedures, chemical processes, and safety practices, and periodically update their knowledge of chemical technology.
- Apply knowledge of boiler and water analysis, water treatment processes, and deionized water production to support plant operations where applicable.
- Use familiarity with mechanical parts and basic repair to assist in the maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory and process equipment.
- 5 to 10 years of experience working as a chemical technician or in a closely related laboratory or industrial role.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or another field of science with a minimum of 12 semester hours in Chemistry.
- Strong knowledge of chemistry principles and practical laboratory techniques, including solution preparation and analytical testing.
- Experience and competency in the use, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
- Knowledge of proper analytical methods and techniques for chemical testing and quality assurance.
- Ability to compile, interpret, and document laboratory test results accurately and clearly.
- Proficiency in following environmental regulations and safety protocols, including those from OSHA and NFRA.
- Demonstrated ability to track inventory, prioritize orders, and maintain organized laboratory operations.
- Skill in monitoring chemical processes and identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving production issues.
- Capability to train and mentor new technicians on laboratory procedures and chemical processes.
- Prior experience and knowledge of boiler and water analysis.
- Previous work experience in a water treatment plant.
- Previous experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge and experience in the production of deionized water.
- Familiarity with mechanical parts and basic equipment repair.
- Experience working in a power plant or similar large-scale facility environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with chemists, engineers, and other technical personnel.
This position is based onsite at a power plant facility, specifically at the Lindsey Hill Power Plant. The role operates in a laboratory environment within an industrial setting, where the technician works closely with production and operations teams. The work involves regular use of laboratory instrumentation, analytical equipment, and chemical handling tools, as well as interaction with mechanical systems related to water treatment, boiler operations, and deionized water production. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and standardized operating procedures. Work may involve standing for extended periods, working around active industrial equipment, and handling chemicals under controlled conditions. Appropriate laboratory and industrial attire, including personal protective equipment, is required to ensure safety and compliance with site-specific policies.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 - $30.00/hr.
