Job Title: Model-Based Systems Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on developing and maintaining model-based systems engineering (MBSE) solutions for complex system-of-systems architectures, with a strong emphasis on hypersonic wind tunnel and advanced aerospace programs. You will build and refine models using Cameo Systems Modeler / MagicDraw, establish modeling standards, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to define system requirements, interfaces, and behaviors. You will also support the full systems engineering lifecycle, contribute to major technical reviews, and help drive innovative engineering solutions for cutting-edge aerospace and defense initiatives. The position offers significant ownership, the opportunity to shape modeling practices, and a key role in mentoring and uplifting the broader engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain MBSE models for complex system-of-systems architectures using Cameo Systems Modeler and MagicDraw.
- Support advanced hypersonic wind tunnel development efforts and related engineering activities.
- Create and maintain modeling standards, guidebooks, and best practices to support collaborative multi-user model development.
- Partner with multidisciplinary engineering teams to define system requirements, interfaces, behaviors, and architecture relationships.
- Apply systems engineering processes across the engineering lifecycle, including requirements definition, allocation, and traceability.
- Support systems engineering lifecycle activities such as technical reviews, requirements management, and milestone execution for defense and aerospace programs.
- Train, mentor, and coach engineering team members in MBSE methodologies, SysML modeling, and model administration.
- Communicate technical and program status using MBSE artifacts, dashboards, and model-driven insights for stakeholders and leadership.
- Lead or facilitate modeling sessions and design reviews to ensure consistency, quality, and alignment with program objectives.
- Contribute to model-based design integration across multidisciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical, aerospace, and systems disciplines.
- Collaborate with requirements management teams and tools to ensure accurate, traceable, and verifiable requirements within the model.
- Support the development and improvement of hypersonic systems, wind tunnel capabilities, and advanced research and development programs.
- Demonstrate initiative by identifying opportunities to improve modeling workflows, tools, and processes within a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Provide guidance and support to team members on best practices for working in multi-user modeling environments.
- Actively participate in cross-functional collaboration, resolving technical issues and contributing to a positive, high-trust team culture.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience developing MBSE models using Cameo Systems Modeler and MagicDraw for complex system-of-systems designs.
- Experience creating MBSE modeling standards, guidebooks, or best practices to support multi-user modeling environments.
- Experience applying systems engineering processes across the full engineering lifecycle.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience supporting cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience supporting United States Department of Defense or NASA engineering lifecycle activities and milestone reviews.
- Experience leading, mentoring, or training team members in MBSE model development and administration.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a self-driven mindset suited to a fast-paced engineering environment.
- At least 3 years of strong MBSE modeling-from-scratch experience.
- Proficiency with Cameo, MagicDraw, or Enterprise Architect for systems modeling.
- Experience with requirements management tools or processes, including tools such as IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next (DNG) or equivalent.
- Ability and interest in teaching, instructing, or leading others in MBSE and systems engineering practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Aerospace, mechanical, or other physics-based engineering experience.
- Familiarity with engineering and requirements management tools such as IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next (DNG) and Jira.
- Experience supporting hypersonic systems, wind tunnel development, or advanced research and development programs.
- Familiarity with model-based design integration across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience in avionics, aerospace, defense, or other industries involving large, interconnected mechanical systems.
- Degree or advanced study in a STEM discipline.
- Experience with systems modeling languages such as SysML.
- Experience with missiles, space systems, or other complex aerospace platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to read a room, adapt communication style, and navigate interpersonal challenges constructively.
- Team-oriented mindset characterized by humility, ambition, and strong people skills.
Work Environment
The work environment emphasizes a strong, family-like culture where many team members have previously worked together and have built a foundation of trust. The team is growing quickly, creating significant opportunities to take ownership, establish best practices, and make a substantial impact on both the organization and its projects. You will work on site, supporting multiple hypersonic wind tunnels and advanced aerospace initiatives, alongside multidisciplinary engineers who value collaboration, open communication, and continuous learning. The culture rewards team players who are strong communicators, demonstrate humility and ambition, and are people-smart, with the ability to navigate interpersonal dynamics thoughtfully. The environment is fast-paced and engineering-focused, with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility, and offers a setting where teaching, mentoring, and shared problem-solving are integral to daily work.
