Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer – Thermo-Structural designs and analyzes mechanical systems to solve complex engineering challenges across thermo-structural applications. This role serves as a task lead on select efforts while also contributing individually, translating customer requirements into detailed, manufacturable designs using sound engineering principles. This engineer develops custom hardware solutions such as test fixtures, mechanical assemblies, pressure vessels, piping systems, and weldments, and collaborates closely with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure effective design integration. The role includes working with designers and operators to ensure designs are manufacturable and maintainable, as well as mentoring junior engineers through hands-on guidance.
Responsibilities
- Lead assigned tasks ensuring technical rigor and due diligence.
- Design custom mechanical and structural hardware.
- Perform structural, thermo-structural, aerothermal, and flow analyses using hand calculations and appropriate software.
- Develop and review design documentation, including reports, calculations, and presentations.
- Review work produced by internal and third-party engineers.
- Present designs and progress to customers for review and feedback.
- Mentor junior engineers in engineering processes, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
- Proficiency in piping design, mechanical design, and designing piping systems for high-pressure tunnel systems for hypersonics testing.
- Experience with high-pressure, low-pressure, water, gas, and fuel piping design.
- Ability to analyze systems ensuring code compliance.
- Experience with Ansys, ASME B31.3, CAESAR, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, and MathCAD.
- 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (equivalent experience may be accepted).
- Ability to obtain a Secret DoD Clearance.
- Desired experience with ANSYS or ABAQUS, CAESAR, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, and MATHCAD.
- Familiarity with CAD modeling, drawing development, and GD&T.
- Experience applying engineering codes and standards such as ASME B31.3, AISC 360-10, AWS D1.1.
- Background in nuclear or oil & gas is highly relevant.
The work location is in Huntsville, AL, with a flexible work schedule but core hours from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM. The position is part of a team of 8 engineers within a larger wind tunnel group of about 20 members. This is a Contract position based out of Huntsville, AL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $55.00 - $87.00/hr.
