Job Title: Senior Histologist
Job Description
This Senior Histologist position involves operating and maintaining microtome and tissue processing equipment to provide high-quality tissue slides for use with proprietary RNAscope technology. The role includes organizing workload, accessioning specimens, tissue embedding, grossing, sectioning, staining, and determining regions of interest based on client requests. The Senior Histologist adheres to all safety, environmental, and infection prevention policies and complies with regulatory and accreditation requirements. Additionally, the Senior Histologist provides training and guidance to the histology team on daily processes and duties.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and routinely use the microtome to generate FFPE slide sections.
- Independently recognize and prepare slides containing client-specified regions of interest, particularly in mouse brain regions.
- Attend client calls and provide guidance on biological sample preparation.
- Identify potential issues with received tissue materials and communicate resolutions to clients.
- Re-gross and re-embed tissues for FFPE block generation as needed.
- Perform H&E staining and scanning.
- Train other histology members on job-related functions.
- Occasionally maintain and use the cryostat to generate frozen tissue sections.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in brain sectioning, staining, downstream tissue processing, and embedding.
- Experience with microtome and sectioning, particularly in mouse brain and organs.
- Ability to image and stain tissue sections.
- 5 or more years of histology experience in a work setting.
- Capability to correctly identify and prepare client-requested regions of interest on tissue sections.
- Expertise in tissue grossing and embedding.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as medical technology or a life science.
- Histology certification by ASCP preferred.
- Experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures and training histologists preferred.
- Ability to handle projects involving large volume sectioning with tight turnaround times.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with precision and accuracy.
- Independence and effective time management skills.
