Job Title: Excavation Laborer / Excavation Technician – Sewer & Water Services
Job Description
This role focuses on performing residential and commercial excavations to support sewer and water service repairs and replacements. You will operate excavation equipment, work in trenches and confined spaces, and assist with pipe repairs and new pipe installations to resolve plumbing issues caused by damaged or compromised lines.
Responsibilities
- Prioritize safety at all times by strictly adhering to OSHA regulations and all company safety protocols.
- Perform excavation tasks for residential and commercial sewer, water, and related plumbing projects.
- Support and perform pipe repairs and new pipe installations following excavation activities.
- Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, skid steers, and other excavation machinery equipped with scoops, shovels, or buckets to excavate and load loose materials.
- Work safely and efficiently in confined spaces and open trenches while maintaining awareness of surroundings and underground utilities.
- Navigate and work effectively in various excavation environments, including trench operations and tight access areas.
- Drive and operate a service vehicle safely between job sites and ensure timely arrival at each location.
- Locate job sites accurately using provided directions, maps, or digital tools and prepare the work area for excavation.
- Interact professionally and courteously with customers on-site, answering basic questions and representing the company positively.
- Complete assigned jobs within specified timelines while maintaining quality workmanship and safety standards.
- Assist with trenchless water, sewer, and gas work when required, supporting more advanced technicians or leads.
- Work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed to meet project and customer demands.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in clean, safe, and working condition and report any issues promptly.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience in excavation projects within residential and commercial construction settings.
- Demonstrated ability to work safely and efficiently in excavation environments, including confined spaces and trench operations.
- Proficiency in operating heavy excavation equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, skid steers, and similar machinery.
- Working knowledge of trenching, ditches, and piping for sewer, water, or related plumbing applications.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days if required for the vehicle driven.
- Ability to complete jobs within specified timelines while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
- Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, based on project needs.
- Physical ability to perform general labor, including lifting, digging, and working in varying weather conditions and terrains.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in construction, excavation, and plumbing environments.
- Background in trenchless water, sewer, and gas work is a strong plus.
- Experience with piping installation and repair for sewer and water lines.
- Familiarity with heavy equipment such as dozers and related machinery.
- Operator certifications for heavy equipment are beneficial.
- Mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot basic equipment and tool issues.
- Prior experience as a general laborer on construction or excavation sites.
- Exposure to working across a wide geographic area, including the East Bay region from Fremont and the Tri-Valley area up to Benicia and as far east as Tracy.

Work Environment
You will work primarily in the field across the East Bay region, traveling by service vehicle to residential and commercial job sites from the core East Bay down to Fremont, through the Tri-Valley area up to Benicia, and as far east as Tracy. The role is hands-on and physically active, involving outdoor work in varying weather conditions, as well as tasks in open trenches and confined spaces. You will regularly use heavy equipment such as backhoes, mini-excavators, skid steers, and other excavation machinery, along with standard construction and plumbing tools. The schedule may include early starts, extended days, nights, and weekend shifts to meet project and customer needs. Work is performed under strict safety protocols, with an emphasis on OSHA compliance, proper use of protective equipment, and maintaining clean, organized vehicles and job sites.
