Job Title: Steel Drafter/BIM Modeler
Job Description
The Steel Drafter/BIM Modeler supports structural steel projects by creating detailed 3D models and producing accurate shop and fabrication drawings used by the fabrication shop to build steel components. This position offers close training and mentorship from a Sr. Steel Detailer, with a clear path to increased responsibility and the opportunity to manage multiple projects over time in a friendly, full-service steel fabrication environment.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain detailed 3D models for structural steel components and assemblies.
- Produce accurate shop and fabrication drawings for beams, columns, plates, and connections.
- Read and interpret architectural and structural design drawings and translate them into clear, buildable detailing packages.
- Coordinate closely with the main Steel Detailer and the fabrication team to address questions, incorporate redlines, and keep projects moving efficiently.
- Apply a high standard of accuracy and professionalism in all detailing work.
- Stay organized, manage time effectively, and consistently meet project deadlines.
- Start by working on one project at a time while learning company standards and detailing workflows.
- Grow into managing up to three projects simultaneously as independence and proficiency increase, while maintaining quality and schedule commitments.
- Support fabrication and steel erection activities by providing clear, complete, and timely detailing documentation.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of steel detailing experience in any capacity or industry.
- Early-career experience with steel detailing gained through work, internship, coursework, or training.
- Ability to read and understand design and shop drawings and convert them into accurate detailing packages.
- Foundational knowledge of structural steel, drafting, detailing, fabrication, and steel erection concepts.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
- Willingness to learn new methods, standards, and workflows under the guidance of a Sr. detailer.
- Dependable follow-through and reliability in completing assigned tasks.
- General computer literacy sufficient to work with detailing tools and documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Exposure to AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
- General computer skills, including familiarity with Word and Excel.
- Familiarity with structural steel terminology and common industry concepts and standards.
- Interest in growing from a junior to a more independent detailer role under mentorship.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a Sr. detailer and fabrication personnel in a shop-focused environment.
Work Environment
This role is based in a steel fabrication shop environment, working Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You will collaborate closely with one Sr.-level steel detailer and interact regularly with the fabrication team. The setting is hands-on and production-oriented, offering direct exposure to how detailed models and shop drawings translate into fabricated steel components. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $24.00 - $30.00/hr.
