Sr Environmental Compliance Consultant / EHS Leader
Job Description
This role provides environmental and EHS compliance leadership with a strong focus on AST/UST systems, hazardous waste and Title 22 requirements, and comprehensive environmental regulatory compliance. You will serve as a trusted technical authority for multiple clients, leading complex compliance initiatives, defending regulatory positions, and providing judgment-based advisory support. The position emphasizes high-level technical execution, regulatory strategy, and client impact rather than sales quotas or formal business development targets.
Responsibilities
- Lead environmental and EHS compliance programs with a primary focus on AST/UST compliance, hazardous waste management, and Title 22 regulatory requirements.
- Serve as the primary technical authority and “expert in the room” during client meetings, audits, and strategy sessions, providing clear, defensible compliance guidance.
- Interface directly with regulatory agencies, including CUPA, Fire, and Health Departments, to manage inspections, negotiate compliance solutions, and support regulatory defense.
- Plan, execute, and oversee environmental regulatory compliance audits, ensuring findings are accurate, actionable, and aligned with current regulations and best practices.
- Develop and review compliance strategies, procedures, and technical deliverables for clients, ensuring they meet or exceed applicable environmental and EHS standards.
- Provide high-level technical advisory support on environmental consulting engagements, helping clients understand risk, prioritize actions, and make informed decisions under imperfect information.
- Manage multiple client engagements simultaneously, balancing competing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Collaborate with internal consulting teams to scope, design, and deliver high-impact projects, including work for complex and high-visibility client sites.
- Support clients in preparing for and responding to regulatory inspections, notices, and enforcement actions, including developing corrective action plans and documentation.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental regulations and emerging compliance trends related to hazardous waste, AST/UST, and broader EHS requirements.
- Contribute to a culture of technical excellence, autonomy, and accountability by sharing expertise, mentoring colleagues, and modeling sound professional judgment.
- Optionally support related compliance areas such as stormwater, wastewater, ISO-based systems, and limited air permitting, depending on experience and project needs.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience in environmental and EHS compliance leadership, ideally within a consulting environment.
- Deep expertise in AST/UST compliance, including understanding of regulatory requirements, inspection practices, and corrective actions.
- Strong proficiency in hazardous waste management and Title 22 compliance, including classification, storage, handling, and documentation requirements.
- Proven ability to lead environmental regulatory compliance programs and audits across multiple facilities or client sites.
- Experience interfacing directly with regulatory agencies such as CUPA, Fire Departments, and Health Departments, including during inspections and negotiations.
- Track record of serving as a client-facing consulting authority and recognized subject matter expert in environmental and EHS compliance.
- Ability to operate effectively in multi-client consulting environments, managing competing priorities and making sound decisions with imperfect information.
- Strong skills in environmental regulatory compliance, including interpretation of regulations and practical application in complex operational settings.
- Experience in environmental consulting delivery, including planning, executing, and overseeing technical projects and advisory engagements.
- Excellent client relationship management skills, with the ability to build trust, communicate complex regulatory issues clearly, and influence decision-making.
- Readiness and aptitude for consulting work; this role is not suited to purely in-house EHS professionals who are not prepared for a consulting environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with stormwater compliance, including familiarity with Industrial General Permit (IGP) requirements.
- Exposure to wastewater compliance, wastewater management, or wastewater engineering in an industrial or municipal context.
- Familiarity with stormwater design principles and best management practices.
- Experience with ISO-based management systems (such as environmental or quality management systems).
- Limited exposure to air permitting processes and requirements.
- Bckgrd in business development support within consulting, such as identifying opportunities and expanding client relationships, without quota-carrying responsibilities.
Work Environment
The role operates in a hybrid consulting environment that combines in-office work with field and client-site activities. In-office presence is preferred to support collaboration, mentoring, and direct client and team interaction; fully remote work is not supported. You will work across multiple client sites and project types, including high-impact and high-visibility locations such as national park facilities and other complex operations. The environment emphasizes autonomy, professional judgment, and client impact rather than rigid processes or micromanagement. You will use standard office technology, environmental compliance tools, and field documentation methods while engaging regularly with regulatory agencies and client stakeholders. The culture values trusted Sr. consultants who can manage their own workload, handle competing priorities, and deliver high-quality, defensible work in a dynamic consulting setting.
