Description
Our client is seeking a senior-level systems engineer to support a major virtualization modernization initiative involving the migration of approximately 50% of its applicable workload from VMware to Microsoft Hyper-V.
The engineer will help plan and execute the migration while providing ongoing engineering and operational support for the Hyper-V environment. This is not a general VMware or infrastructure engineering role with occasional Hyper-V exposure. The organization needs a Microsoft virtualization specialist who has directly owned production Hyper-V clusters and can independently troubleshoot complex clustering, compute, networking, and storage issues.
Responsibilities:
- Engineer, administer, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise Microsoft Hyper-V environments.
- Build, configure, validate, upgrade, and support Windows Server Failover Clusters.
- Manage Hyper-V hosts and clusters through SCVMM.
- Plan and execute production workload migrations from VMware to Hyper-V.
- Perform workload discovery, dependency analysis, migration testing, cutover planning, rollback planning, and post-migration validation.
- Evaluate workload readiness and identify migration risks or technical dependencies.
- Configure and support cluster quorum, witnesses, Cluster Shared Volumes, Live Migration, Storage Migration, virtual networking, and high availability.
- Troubleshoot complex Hyper-V, Windows clustering, storage, networking, performance, and availability issues.
- Analyze cluster logs, Windows event logs, SCVMM jobs, PowerShell output, and platform telemetry to identify root causes.
- Support the integration of Microsoft virtualization with HPE Synergy compute and HPE storage.
- Participate in infrastructure incidents, root-cause analysis, and post-incident improvement activities.
- Participate in occasional after-hours production changes and on-call support.
- Develop and maintain operating procedures, technical documentation, architecture diagrams, runbooks, and knowledge-transfer materials.
- Collaborate with architecture, network, storage, security, operations, vendor, and offshore engineering teams.
- Mentor other engineers and provide senior-level technical direction when needed.
Qualifications
- Extensive enterprise infrastructure engineering experience, typically 8–10+ years.
- Deep, recent, hands-on ownership of Microsoft Hyper-V in a large production environment.
- Expert-level Windows Server Failover Clustering experience.
- Strong hands-on SCVMM administration experience.
- Direct experience migrating production workloads from VMware to Hyper-V.
- Advanced Windows Server engineering and troubleshooting experience.
- Strong understanding of enterprise SAN/NAS storage and virtualization dependencies.
- Experience identifying whether an issue originates in compute, storage, networking, Windows, SCVMM, or the virtualization layer.
- Experience supporting business-critical, highly available production environments.
- Experience participating in on-call rotations and after-hours change windows.
- Strong PowerShell skills are preferred.
- HPE Synergy and HPE storage experience are strongly preferred.
- Healthcare or similarly regulated enterprise experience is preferred.
- Strong documentation, communication, and knowledge-transfer skills.
