Job Description
This Environmental Engineer role focuses on planning, designing, and delivering critical water and wastewater infrastructure projects, including pipelines, pump stations, and treatment facilities. You will contribute to engineering designs, technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates, while helping ensure that projects protect public health, safeguard the environment, and strengthen community resilience. The position combines office-based engineering and analysis with field activities such as site investigations, inspections, and testing.
Responsibilities
- Perform engineering work for water and wastewater treatment infrastructure, including pipelines, pump stations, and related facilities.
- Develop engineering designs, calculations, and drawings for a variety of water and wastewater projects.
- Prepare technical reports, engineering studies, and alternative analyses that support project decision-making.
- Develop project plans, specifications, and detailed cost estimates in accordance with applicable standards and quality procedures.
- Support permitting efforts by preparing technical documentation and coordinating required engineering inputs.
- Check performance and verify conformity with plans and specifications through field inspections and testing activities.
- Assist with the preparation of technical memoranda, reports, and electronic deliverables for internal and external stakeholders.
- Perform data entry, data management, and engineering data analysis to support design and decision-making.
- Participate in field activities such as site investigations, pilot testing, and condition assessments.
- Apply systems engineering principles to evaluate water and wastewater infrastructure and recommend improvements.
- Support adherence to project budgets, schedules, contractual obligations, and quality standards in collaboration with engineers.
- Use critical thinking, engineering judgment, and innovative techniques to develop options and recommendations that solve technical problems.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams and contribute to a high standard of technical quality.
- Communicate clearly with project team members and clients, including presenting technical information in a concise and understandable manner.
- Contribute to quality assurance procedures and support continuous improvement of engineering processes and deliverables.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering.
- 6 to 12 years of wastewater design experience in environmental consulting engineering.
- Experience with hydraulics and physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes.
- Experience in wastewater treatment plant design.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Ability to apply engineering principles using critical thinking, analysis, and innovative techniques.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and manage project teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience with water and wastewater systems and infrastructure.
- Understanding of quality assurance procedures for engineering deliverables.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- civil engineering, environmental engineering, or chemical engineering related to water and wastewater projects.
- Experience with systems engineering concepts applied to water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Familiarity with water resources, pipelines, and water distribution or collection system design.
- Experience with water testing and interpreting water quality data.
- EIT certification, successful completion of the FE exam, or equivalent early-career registration is valuable for progression to higher-level roles.
- Experience supporting adherence to budget, schedule, contractual obligations, and quality standards on engineering projects.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to use innovative techniques to develop practical engineering solutions.
- Interest in work that directly supports public health, environmental protection, and community resilience.
- Motivation to grow technically and take on increasingly complex project responsibilities.
Work Environment
This role operates in a delivery‑driven consulting environment focused exclusively on water and wastewater projects. Workloads can become heavy during peak design and construction phases, especially on large or complex programs, and you should be comfortable managing competing priorities and working to firm deadlines. The culture emphasizes strong learning opportunities, high expectations for technical quality, and clear accountability for deliverables. You will work with multidisciplinary engineering teams using standard office software and industry engineering tools to produce reports, designs, and specifications, and you will also participate in field work such as site investigations, inspections, and testing. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Sacramento, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $155000.00/hr.
